Default Manual targeting?

Hello everybody:

After a couple of solid patrols (18 to 20000-ish tons) I´ve decided to turn on the manual targeting system and to set up the attacks I´ve been using the "Fast Subs" mod, but it just doesn't feel right seeing my little Type IIa going 24 knots and out running destroyers.

Are there any guides on preparing attacks with the default speeds and catching up contacts from behind?

(Sorry if this was already asked, I´ve looked for almost an hour now and I can´t find the thread)

First, welcome!

Not sure if these are the steps you are looking for but setting up an attack can take some time from initial contact is made. Surprise contacts at close range are another matter and for that I would give it a miss most of the time.

For normal attacks I would
1) Contact be it visual or sound: Plot the best you can target course and speed. Keep your distance to allow yourself to travel on the surface to overtake and reach attack position. Dive when approaching position or some time before distance to target is getting small for them to detect you.

2a) If you are confident your plot is good in respect to target course and speed, and visual confirms it, you can set up for a 90*short to medium range straight shot where distance to target is less important but you will still need a good approximation of target speed and course.

2b) If you believe your plot is too inaccurate for a 90* straight shot solution, you have some options like

EDIT: On that last point, 2b, I can personally vouch for at least the 2nd method works well for non standard shots. One successful attack I made using the 2nd method had the target getting hit when it was at my 320 to 330 bearing, AoB somewhere between 75 and 85, distance about 2000 meters.

In my opinion, when dealing with "overtaking" a convoy, you need to be able to use the UZO correctly. As Von Due stated you need to know a general course of the convoy and speed.

You can't use nearest visual target as this usually is an escort, and the move around too much, and change speed often.

Pick a target as "reference" in the convoy, use the range lines on the UZO, and determine the range. This does not have to be entirely accurate as you want a general course. Mark it on your map and do this every so often.

Mast height X 1000 / (mils X 10) = range

Default So...

First let me thank everybody for the warm welcome they gave me into the community

What I meant was that the Type IIa has like a 5kt speed submerged and all the sound contacts seem to get away from me every time, I feel like a little dog chasing trucks.

Is there a way of intercepting targets that are moving away? I suppose that should have been the first question.

Welcome to subsim!
I learned to plot/intercept/target using the excellent guide "Wazoo's Manual Plotting & Targeting Tutorial".
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=206381
Its very well explained, and very effective (just ask the ships i come across LOL).
The link i provided is a copy of it here in subsim, the original one i learned from was on webarchive, but it doesnt seem to work anymore.

Also, now that you want to use manual targeting, i suggest you get rid of the mod you are using. I recommend Living Silent Hinter 3, its perfect for new players as its easier than vanilla, and it has the best looks sh3 can have.
You can also try vanilla if you want it a little harder.
Leter when you feel comfortable with targeting and other basic stuff, you can if you wish move to more difficult mods, like GWX, NYGM, etc.
