You can tell a lot about a soldier by what he carries in his kit. It really shows how much gear a soldier was able to carry going from at least 20+ pieces of gear in 1066 to the 100+ carried by the modern soldier.

Of course the thing to keep in mind is that with more modern kit you do not always take all of it with you. For example gas masks and chem gear you would not bring every time unless you planned to use CS or expected an enemy NBC threat.
