Default Inventories of War: British Soldier's kits, 1066-2014

I thought that was just a fascinating series of photos, which say a lot about war over the past 1000 years without even needing words

You can tell a lot about a soldier by what he carries in his kit. It really shows how much gear a soldier was able to carry going from at least 20+ pieces of gear in 1066 to the 100+ carried by the modern soldier.

Very nice display! It's amazing how much we can learn just from looking at a soldier's issue and personal belongings.

Of course the thing to keep in mind is that with more modern kit you do not always take all of it with you. For example gas masks and chem gear you would not bring every time unless you planned to use CS or expected an enemy NBC threat.
