" .... But, here, I want to focus and elaborate on the overarching point revealed by all of these documents: namely, that these agencies are attempting to control, infiltrate, manipulate, and warp online discourse, and in doing so, are compromising the integrity of the internet itself. ..."

What the hell is the "integrity of the internet"
The internet is a public place where anyone can participate. GHCQ agents have every right to express their opinions or that of their employers on the internet like everyone else. They have the same right to take on different identities and banter like the rest of us. Hell, maybe some of our friends here on Subsim work for the GHCQ. PS: Please don't hurt me Mr Bond. God save the queen! |

It has been said before that the lion's share of missions and projects of intelligence services is not directed at rivalling or hostile faction and targets, but is focussing on the manipulation of own country's population.
the internet and mass media make it hilariously easy to commit character-assassination or to overrule unwanted opinions by mere volume. That the Brits, like any other PR agency, advertisment company, political lobby worker and so on, do that, is not shocking, the GCHQ just is an obedient servant of a deeply criminal and disgusting organisation called "state". Shocking only is the unbelievable willingness of ordinary people to not care for it even when learning about it, and to let this happen to them. He who voluntarily wriggles on the ground like a worm, should not complain when being walked over and stepped upon - he asked for it.

![]() ![]() I saw what you wrote there, you seem to be afraid, better think of Johnny English then ![]() OnT: I think the possibility to destroy anyone's reputation via "social media" (lmao) just because someone criticizes something, is 'mildly disturbing' ? " ... it is not difficult to see how dangerous it is to have secret government agencies being able to target any individuals they want – who have never been charged with, let alone convicted of, any crimes – with these sorts of online, deception-based tactics of reputation destruction and disruption ..." I have nothing against such methods, were they only used against the bad guys. Nothing against doing this against e.g. a weapon dealer, but unfortunately those are mostly regarded as the good guys. However, AFAIK a lot of the NSA workers have already spied on their close friends, lovers etc.; lots of articles about this relatively 'harmless' ahem abuse (as long as you are not the target). " ... Among the core self-identified purposes of JTRIG are two tactics: (1) to inject all sorts of false material onto the internet in order to destroy the reputation of its targets; and (2) to use social sciences and other techniques to manipulate online discourse and activism to generate outcomes it considers desirable. ..." They also do it to companies. Peaceful hegemony ![]() But you are right, the 'free' Internet as we thought it would be, never really existed. Being created by DARPA, what did we think .. So if there is no control over those agencies possible (even by their own governments), we need something different. |
