What realism settings does everyone typically use? And how do you fair in patrols, tonnage? I typically have 59% realism with limited fuel, dud torpedoes, manual targeting, map contact, weapon officer, and event camera unchecked.

I play NYGM which states I have 100 % difficulty even though I've left the external views on for checking the effects of all these great new mods. I usually get around 20000 - 25000 GRT per patrol. I don't care that much about tonnage now. Instead I go for a combination of safety and at least one badly damaged or sinking ship after every convoy attack. I'm happy when I manage to sink a ship during a nightly surface attack and get away on the surface without being detected. When I get caught I kick myself while crash diving.
I'm currently learning and practicing basic maneuvering board techniques and thinking of learning how to use the sextant and taking account of the drift caused by the wind. I also have a goal of experimenting with a kind of escort trap where I could have a decent chance of ambushing a convoy flank guard in relative safety. With H.sie's torpedo failures and manual targeting I find sinking escorts very difficult for me.

when playing a game of silent Hunter with GWX I have all the game files set for true. I've copied the game MAP, in great detail. After checking my position on the game map I Mark that position on the map that I have made ,outside the game. I play the game and if I survive I then try to return to one of the submarine bases nearest my position

I play with %97 realism for the moment. Event camera is left on to observe how successful my Manual Targeting was. For the beginning I can recommend you to check limited CO2, Fuel, 0xygen, Batteries etc.. Just left Automatic Targeting on. It all depends what you except from Silent Hunter 3 and how you enjoy it.
If you enjoy achieving thing while being closest to reality, then go for manual targeting, h.sie's hardcoded fixes and other realism mods. (If you want to feel what ubooters or submariners felt during war then max the volume and try to command you sub from command room on TC= 1 while depth charges explodes) If you enjoy more in arcade style, continue with automatic targeting and other super sub mod.

I like challenge but when I had 4/5 of my torpedoes detonate early time and again that was it for me with dud torpedoes, fuel was annoying, I don't mind co2, air, and battery and they add to the challenge since they can reach danger when surfacing is a horrible idea. I don't think I'll ever be hard core enough for manual aiming as my norm.
