Default SH4 1.4 weather is rediculous!

Hi everyone.

I'm fairly new to sub sims but I had a go at SH3 and now SH4.

I want to be able to enjoy the game but the weather is really spoiling it BIG TIME! Please tell me there's a mod to tinker with the environs or I'm gonna dump the game. Since when does the swell reach 60ft plus for weeks?

I've spent the first three patrols in identical weather. Is that all there is in the game? I have to sit 15ft above periscope depth in order to see anything and the obs and attack scopes are still flooded out to the point of uselessness. Torpedos dont run in that kind of swell since half the run will be in fresh air! As for the deck gun its a joke, on, off, on, off! Am I indicating my frustration well enough yet?

Any help is gratefully appreciated. Tell me there's a mod or its secondhand software.

Welcome to the peaceful Pacific Ocean! Yes, running 5' above periscope depth is very helpful sometimes. Lousy weather is only lousy for the poor targets. You'll learn to pray for this kind of weather.

And you will learn to be very, very afraid when the sea is smooth.

Under game options make sure "Stabilize Weather" is NOT ticked

Cheers

"And you will learn to be very, very afraid when the sea is smooth."

And shallow. And narrow. I have nightmares about smooth, shallow, narrow seas.

I've not got that opion in my copy of sh4 1.4. Are you referring to tmo options or something like that?

All I want is to calm the weather a bit. Even the enemy destroyers are up to the bridges in water when the waves arrive. If I dont find anything in the next few weeks its history! I'll simply spend more time flying my 747 around simworld instead.

SH is my kind of game but it has to entertain, surely! Right now it's just making me angry that the swell makes it unplayable in the extreme.

I remember WEEKS of 15 m/s winds and corresponding seas in SHIII...

You will find most folks here run SHIV v1.5 + mods. You *may* find folks running 1.4, they will be few and far between.

Many more tweaks/balance issues addressed with mods for 1.5.

Best advice, overall, I can offer? Get v1.5. Improved over 1.4 and it's the best base to run almost all mods from.

You could try control N to change the weather. but be careful when you do as the the weather will clear and be calm and if there is a DD or something you couldn't see before he will see you now.

Cheer up the weather will break at some point.

As pointed out above calm seas and clear skys are not your friends.
Easier for you but also easier for them. I never attack a convoy in those conditions if I can help it. I'll track the target and attack at night.

You might also try Websters (got it right this time) Game Fix Only mod, GFO.
It fixes a lot of the problems and I think it will work with V1.4.

Good luck and good hunting Magic

If you're complaining about living in submarine heaven it's time to fire up the 747 and be done with it. You aren't cut out for a submarine. May I suggest Borderlands 2?

Thanks Admiral

I will try the <Ctrl>N you suggest and report back. I'll have a go with GFO as well.

(Update! GFO seems to have done the trick. I still have a swell but it is now more realistic. I did a full reinstall and added the mods as webster suggested. FYI the <Ctrl>N keyset becalmed the sea to flat mirror. I'm also going to make sure I have the latest graphics drivers installed as well because I think that was a part of the problem too.)

Thanks everyone for the help.

No, I was referring to this. Its in 1.5

If you check that in 1.5 you can get very sea sick targeting.

Hi Sinky_Bloke and welcome,

In your post you mention having a go at SH3,how did you find the weather in SH3?SH4's weather is tame in comparison. On my current patrol been out for 25 days-no rain, hardly any fog,max wind speed 9ms-so i'm praying for a bit of rough weather. As was suggested above get the 1.5 patch(uboat missions expansion needed-it's not a standalone patch)and maybe try running a couple of mods to get the best out of this sim.

good luck and good hunting

It sounds to me like Mr Bloke is describing something anomalous, if he is truly experiencing constant 15 foot swells. Its hard to troubleshoot 1.4 though, the game "as is" would rate as only a 'good try' in my opinion.

I would encourage you to read in these foums about JSGME, and with a fresh, patched, and updated install to take the plunge on TMO 2.5. It changed my whole experience of the game.

Good luck, and welcome!

Thank you for the warm welcome Sir!

That's what I believe too, anomalous behaviour. I have JSGME installed and use it to switch mods in and out to see if I can reduce the seemingly excessive swells being modelled. So far no luck though.

As for 1.5... I'm not in a position to justify the extra cost for the U-Boat Mission pack at this time. I'm hoping to find a solution to this problem so that the game, no matter the patch/mod/tweak settings, has a fair and proper chance to entertain, at least as much as all the folks in this community are a pleasure to read. The last thing I want is to lose out on such an excellent sim idea. If I find a solution I will most definitely post it for all to see, unlike some forums I've trawled in my quest.
