I'm using TMO+RSRD+Traveller's mod and my sub is currently off Tulagi and it's November 5th. Should I hang around for the Naval battle of Guadalcanal or not?(I really want to sink the Hiei or Kirishima but with my luck I would end up sinking the South Dakota or Washington.)

Absolutely stick around, the battles are recreated well in RSRD. The First and Second Battles(November 12/13 and November 15) Battle is quite large, takes place at night, cant get confusing but watching them slug it out is awesome.I would not attack until they have engaged (IJN and US forces) that is because if you attack, throw off the timing since ijn will slow down etc will messed up the battle, may not make contact. I like to get into position watch it unfold then move in for the kill, take out a BB while he escorts are distracted. There are many different ways to approach this, it never gets old and yes, fog of war, be careful, i once torpedoed a US heavy cruiser during the chaos, esp with traveller mod not having the ID button(unless you activated it), easy to do. The morning after such battles usually leaves a mess of lifeboats, debris and crippled ships in the area, so make sure you search it thoroughly.Example, found a heavy cruiser dead in water, ran aground on north side of savo island one time, morning after the 12/13 november battle off guadalcanal.Takao heavy ca, was not showing up on map or radar(do to island i guess). Put to torpedoes into her, she exploded, burned furiously, but since was aground did not sink, i was given credit. Always fun to find a BB dead in water or limping away also. |

One last question. Surface attack or submerged?(My thinking with the surface option is they would be more worried about the battleships and cruisers then my sub.)

I would go submerged on this one....one if they spot you, they will start attacking you instead of other forces, some wacky thing ive seen before, they will focus on player.Example, using the pre pearl harbor mod, i rushed to malayan coast in dec 1941 so could see the ijn bomber attack on British Force Z.I was on surface, bombers focused on my little s boat more than they did the Battleship lol. I have had this happen in engagements as well.So stay submerged and observe. Side note, US subs did not really do surface attacks unless using guns prior to 43. Most of them did not even have TBT's at that point, one of those things the game kind of fudged on. |
