German railways to test anti-graffiti drones

The Future.

Quote:
Germany's national railway company, Deutsche Bahn, plans to test small drones to try to reduce the amount of graffiti being sprayed on its property.

The idea is to use airborne infra-red cameras to collect evidence, which could then be used to prosecute vandals who deface property at night.

Would seem simpler to make a spray painting drone that just covers up anything it finds. Maybe if it finds someone in the process it spray paints him as well.

Would it not be cheaper to just install ground mounted cameras covering the yard. Unless the idea is to deter the vandalize by the noise of the drone?

The Deutsche Bahn not only owns the trainyards, but also many railway tunnels (>900) and 33000 km of tracks. I think a 2m corridor next to the rails is technically also in their possession. So this whole thing could mean much more surveillance than just the yards the Bahn spokesperson stated in the article.

In my hometown the police chopper is often used to hunt down those graffiti terrorists - much to the joy of the residents who live next to Bahn property.

Strange news seeing as the Luftwaffe have just cancelled their Global Hawk UAV buy due to certification issues meaning they could not be used within EU airspace.
