It amazes me where some of the signature pictures come from. I have a good collection of U534 which can now be seen at the new Nautical Museum in Birkenhead, which is across the water from Liverpool.

Liverpool during the war, was the headquarters of the Atlantic Operations for controlling the movement of convoys and the U boat threat. So you could say U534 has found its final resting place close to, where so many merchant ships left for the last time or never made it across the Atlantic. instead of lying 400 ft below the Kattegat off the Danish Coast, where it was discovered then raised again. This U boat, apart from U505, at the Chicago Museum Of Science in the USA, U534 is the only other surviving Type 1X40C, U boat left.

Incidentally, if you want a good book to read, look for Steel Boat Iron Hearts by Hans Goebler. He was an ordinary crew member of U505 who served on board through all of its patrols from 1941 to 1945 when U505 was finally captured by the Americans. Hans kept a record of all his time spent aboard and finally emigrated to America to be near the boat he loved so much. He acted as a guide aboard U505 showing visitors around the boat. Unfortunately, Hans died in 1999 just before his book was published, but if you have not read it, then do so. I t is one of the best books I have read about life aboard a U boat from an ordinary sailors point of view.

So I have decided to change my signature photo at certain intervals, so that other members can see different views of this now Rusted U boat, which inspired me to use Rusty Submarine as my user name.

Look here for many, many recommendations on submarine books, and a wealth of other things.

She is reluctantly your wife? Or, she likes surface sailors?

So it did not go to the breaker yard but, it was cut into 3 sections to get it there, with no plans to rejoin it.

Well her father was in the merchant navy so I'm guessing she must have a soft spot for sailors but she's never enthusiastic about my sh3 patrol stories, nor impressed with my moon phase chart

So who can say?

Are they planning to restore U 534? Last I had heard quite awhile back was there was no monies available for this, she was heading for the breaker yard-has that changed?
