Default Visit my hometown online

I have no idea how long this has been up, but it's kind of cool:

http://www.virtualtampere.com/

That nifty little site lets you explore my humble little hometown from your own comfortable armchair because let's face it, no one would be mad enough to voluntarily come here in person.

"Yeah, I've got Google Streetview, y'know". Yeah, so do I, but this is actually better. While it doesn't let you explore all the streets like Google does, it compensates by giving a lot more background info on what each place is. On the top of that, it also goes to places where Google won't go, such as parks and in some cases even inside buildings. I haven't explored it fully yet, but it at least let's you explore inside some churches and the main library. And the aerial views are just plain better, because for some reason Google Earth has decided that we have a permanent overcast in here and therefore everything you see is clouded by...well, a cloud, I suppose.

Granted, I'm a local (Insert-Divine-Entity willing not for long, but still), but I have to say I like this. I encourage all of you to have a look too. And I can probably answer questions if you find something interesting but can't find enough information about it.

This is very well made and intuitive application. I noticed that each place has in fact a summer and a winter pic, which you can change by clicking on the place thumbnail again.

Some random observations:
- It looks pretty clean for an industrial town
- Quite a few mid-rise apartment blocks near the town center, here they tend to be more in the outskirts
- cool, a roller coaster near the TV tower!
- When you walk over Laukonsilta Bridge, you bump into some randomly placed giant trash containers with attached solar panels :

Cool site, the town doesn't look bad at all.

If I owned a van, and a helicopter was above me, the last thing I'd want is this -

That's pretty clever actually. Handy if you need to move them around.

Ah, so there's an electric motor integrated? This would also explain the 380V cable at the side.

Still pretty funny choice of pictures, for a tourist side. When you follow the arrows on the ground level, one moment you are on a bridge overlooking the water, next click: BAM, you hit these containers.

That is one nice and tidy town. Honestly. The litterbugs here in the US should be ashamed.
