South Korea navy 'fires at North Korea fishing boats'

The South Korean navy has fired warning shots at North Korean fishing boats that crossed disputed borders in the Yellow Sea, reports say.

No shots hit the vessels which retreated, said an Associated Press report citing an unnamed official with South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The official also said that no North Korean navy ships were involved.

Skirmishes are common in the area claimed by both sides on the Korean peninsula.

A South Korean defence ministry spokesman told AFP news that there were six North Korean boats.

"Our naval patrol boats twice fired machine gun rounds at the fishing vessels. Afterwards the North Korean vessels retreated to their territory," the unnamed official said.

What you know as a PT boat is an offshoot of the WW1 Thornycroft Coastal Motor Boats.



The original Torpedo Boats date back to the 1880s and were small steel steamships. They were the ancestors of the modern destroyer. This is USS Cushing, America's first Torpedo Boat.

I doubt that there could be North Korean "fishing ships" in South Korean waters without the participation of the North Korean People's Army and the approval of the Communist party and the leaders of the country.

On June 29th, 2002 there was a surprise attack on PKM Chamsuri 357 by a North Korean vessel. PKM Chamsuri 357 , which was conducting close-range maneuvers in an effort to remove the North Korean patrol boat, responded to the provocative suprise attack, and successfully defended the NLL with courage and faith in certain victory. The Captain Lieutenant Commander Yun Young Ha, died in combat while keeping a close watch on enemy movements. The Chief Petty Officer Han Sang Guk, who was manning the rudder until the end during the engagement as a quartermaster. The Petty Officers First Class Cho Cheon Hyung and Hwang Do Hyun, who continued to pull the trigger of the warship guns until their dying moments. The Chief Petty Officer Seo Hoo Won died a heroic death returning fire with an M-60 from the deck, where he could not even conceal himself. Petty officer second class Park Dong Hyuk who was shot while helping his wounded comrades and passed away at a young age after 3 months in hospital.

Yea the 1st photo I posted was of the Chamsuri after the DPRK attack.

Here are some more photos of her showing the damage, the ROK marked the shell holes in red, as you can see she was hit by .50 cal and something heaver maybe 20mm. The bridge was hit by an 85mm round (from a T-34-85's gun turret that was mounted on the DPRK Patrol Boat), I'm guessing some of that damage was repaired before the boat went on display.

Taiwanese boats protest in Japanese territorial waters.Dozens of Taiwanese boats sailed to disputed East China Sea islands in a brief protest, as top Japanese and Chinese diplomats met in Beijing to ease tensions.

The islands, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, are controlled by Japan but claimed by China and Taiwan.

Tension in the region has been high since Japan's purchase of the islands from their private Japanese owner.
