New guy on the forum looking for some assistance. Years and years ago I used to enjoy playing submarine games, but haven't in quite some time. A few weeks ago I decided I wanted to climb into one again, and started looking around. SH5 seems like the latest game, but I read about all the horror stories, read the terrible reviews, and don't really want to have more aggravation than fun. I wanted J2's game play vids online and the graphics are awesome. I prefer to play on my laptop vs. console, but would consider getting both if there are great options.
What do you guys recommend? |

Hard to answer! Everybody has their favourite, but they're all so cheap nowadays that I'd recommend you get 3, 4, and 5 and try for yourself.
![]() All are pretty crap out of the box, all need modding, and all have fantastic mods, there is something out there for you - you may just need a little patience to find it, but it will be worth it. Nothing for console. Ever. ![]() Edit - Oh, and welcome aboard ![]()

Silent Hunter 3 with latest GWX mod. It also saves you from an extensive modding dance. Install one giant mod automatically, and you're done.
But you could throw in a couple of old swinging 40s tunes for the grammophone, or historic radio braodcasts. Adds plenty tgo the atmosphere. German Marschmusik is too terrible as if you want to listen to it all day and all night long. It is fair to say that SH3+GWX founded the modern fame and reputation of the series that neither SH4 nor SH5 ever reached again. I just don't know what it is about the screen ratio. The game has a native ratio of 4:3, no native 16:9 or 16:10 resolution. Somebody else has to share advice on this.

I can get SH2/SH3 combo box for about 8 bucks, so I'll try SH3 first. I'll have to read up on how to do the mods and go from there.
THey had SH5 for .99 the other day (download) and I missed it. ![]() Edit: Will this work on Windows 7? |

Indeed it will, there are a couple of things you need to do but they're stickied in the SH3 forum (or the SH3 Mods forum?).
Best to read before you install for the first time, many don't and wish they did. ![]()

http://www.thegreywolves.com/ Download GWX 3 Gold. Read the manual, at least on installation. Install SH3. Install GWX. Play and see if it works and whether what you see is to your liking. If so, make yourself familiar with the sim. Not before you have done that you should start investiong further time in checkling other additonal mods - and not all of them are meant to be run simultaneously even if they all are comptabile with GWX. So before you invest time in examining that, really spend some time and familiarize yourself with the sim+GWX, to see if it is worth it for you. P.S. I had run it under W7x64.

I can't install the GWX...I get an error message. Source file is corrupted, JoneSoft.txt.
Any ideas?
