Default Flak gun commands missing..

Hi folks.. a little help please?

I just started playing this game a couple of days ago. I noticed that with the flak guns I could man them and give the men orders to shoot at will, choice of range, incoming targets etc, and the guys were pretty successful at taking planes out.

Since completing a few missions up upgrading the gunning/flak deck I see that these commands are now completely missing, I now have no automatic controls any more and the guys are useless at defending me at all.

Why is this?.. and why should an upgrade actually seem to be an awful downgrade?

Thanks..

What is the weather like? You can not man the guns in bad weather.

Bad weather and also moderate to heavy seas, even if the day is clear as a bell. Same applies to the deck gun. U-boats are really crappy gun platforms.
Btw, why are you messing with planes?

To use your deck and/or flak guns in any weather, open the sub type .cfg file and locate the line for Storm Conditions.

Change Storm Conditions=7,0.1; to =30,30.1 to allow use of guns in any weather conditions.

Example, for the type VIIB:

/Ubisoft/SilentHunterIII/Data/Submarine/NSS_Uboat7b.cfg

default:
StormConditions=7,0.1;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1]

changed to:
StormConditions=30,30.1;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1]

Note that you have change the .cfg file for EACH sub type you might play (VIIB, VIIC, VIIC41, IXB, IXC, etc.).

If your crew will man the guns when ordered to do so, but won't fire when the target is available (within the conditions you elected - range, target type, hold or fire at will, etc.), even during good weather, you've got a corrupted file somewhere. Even an unqualfied gun crew, with or without a watch officer on deck, should fire as ordered.

There is a thread here detailing a shortcut key setup that allows the watch officer to man, target, and unleash hell with the flak guns whenever you hear the dreaded "aircraft spotted". I'm assuming a similar sub-routine could do the same for the deck gun.

This is really the cogent question.

I learned the hard way, as I am sure many of us have, that upgrading Flak on the sub is a losing battle. The bad guys (which are actually the good guys ) have an air attack capability that increases far faster than the sub's defense can increase via upgrades.

The only thing to do when detecting an aircraft is to do what they did in real life, dive very fast and hope that they can't kill you.

What I do is
1. Flank speed
2. Crash dive (which I believe automatically calls up flank speed)
3. Turn directly toward the aircraft (there is debate whether this is worth it or whether it is better to just go straight. There are advantages and disadvantages of both)
4. At about 30 meters I turn back to to my original course and continue flank speed until I reach my depth.

I have been pretty successful in surviving air attacks following these steps.

But seriously, don't spend anything on upgraded Flak and dive when you see anything with wings.
