Default PROBLEM ! HELP !

I,m downloading mods for GWX, and some of them are 7Z files, which when downloaded appear as VLC files, thier icon is a traffic cone, just like all my sound files, clicking on them just opens VLC Media player, right clicking just gives media file type options. No extract option, and I don't know what file type they need to be converted to.

There apppears to be no way of extracting the required files. Where am I going wrong ? and how can i convert these files to another file type that is not a media, video or audio file ?

Any and all help would greatly appreciated in this matter, I started a new clean install and I am desperate to get it finished with some new (for me) features.

Cheers Mates,

Spurlash

What program(s) do you normally use for extracting .7z and other compressed files?

Actually, don't answer that, just go get 7-zip, it's open source and free and should extract your .7z files plus pretty much any other compressed format.

If you are relying on the extracting software that is included in some versions of Windows, it won't work with everything. I had to put 7-zip on my work computer last week because someone sent me a bunch of documents compressed into some format that Windows had no clue what to do with.

7zip will definitely work as was suggested above - but I would also like to mention WinRAR for the sake of having an option, and my own good experiences with it. It can extract a variety of archive types (CAB, ARJ, LZH, TAR, GZ, ACE, UUE, BZ2, JAR, ISO, 7Z, Z) and create RAR and ZIP archives - plus it is available in 32 and 64 bit flavors (not that important but a nice option nonetheless).

You can download your choice of version here: WinRAR from Filehippo.

I think the most important message here is, get a good compression/extraction program but don't spend your money on it.

There are just too many really good and completely free options out there.
