Susan Sarandon calls pope a Nazi

Quote:
Susan Sarandon appears to have pulled up a chair at Hank Williams Jr. and Lars Von Trier's table: The activist-actress is in a harsh spotlight after describing Pope Benedict XVI as a Nazi during a sit-down chat at the Hamptons International Film Festival on Saturday.

During an interview by actor Bob Balaban, the "Dead Man Walking" Oscar winner said she'd sent a copy of that book to the pope — clarifying that she was talking about the previous pontiff, John Paul II, "Not this Nazi one we have now." After Balaban "tut-tutted" (in the words of Newsday), the actress repeated her comment.

The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights and the Anti-Defamation League were less than amused.

"Ms. Sarandon may have her differences with the Catholic Church, but that is no excuse for throwing around Nazi analogies," ADL national director Abraham H. Foxman said Monday in a statement suggesting the actress apologize to the Catholic community. "Such words are hateful, vindictive and only serve to diminish the true history and meaning of the Holocaust."

Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, was a bit more blunt, telling E! News "it is very hard to find someone dumber" than Sarandon, a person he wouldn't seek an apology from because "she is ignorant and full of hatred to the Catholic Church."

I've just skimmed over the text, but forgive me if I'm wrong - the current incumbent was a member of the Hitler Youth and was an AA gunner - kind of points to Susan being at least a little bit correct. And the role has a history - how many wanted war criminals escaped to S. America (and elsewhere) wholly due to the Vatican's interactions in the last days of the war and the following months?

And I know it wasn't just the Vatican that did it, there were others too such as the IRC and individual embassies.

The vast majority of boys and girls were in the Nazi youth organisations, it was part of young life like many children today join the kindergarten. But that alone did not make people Nazis. It was "in", it was cool, and there was plenty of anonymous pressure to join the HJ, and for young boys it also was adventurous and attractive to camp in the woods and have a camp fire. Much like the boy scouts.

Today, pretty many people have facebook accounts, because the social climate is such that for being in you need to want to have one. But not all facebook memembers are internet zombies.

The regime meant the HJ to be a brainwashing program. If it succeeded on even a majority of members, can and must be doubted.

Many German males also joined the oarty. But not always because they were convinced Nazis, but because it was part of the program if they wanted to secure their job to have a living for their family. Most soldiers in the Wehrmacht were no Nazis as well. They just had no choice different from deportation or execution.

Helmut Schmidt was FlAK-helper in the last phase of the war. Does that make him a Nazi, too?

I person should be called Nazi only if he/she is convinced of Nazi ideology in his/her thinking, defends and postulates it's content, and acts and lives accordingly.
