Default Nasty surprises

During my current patrol, I had to dive deep to evade a searching escort. I set my depth for 160 metres (clicked the depth meter twice to make sure) and went to silent running.
I am switching between the hydrophone and the map to keep taps on where this persistent destroyer is headed and what he's doing.

Suddenly, I hear the LI call out "Depth 170 metres". I go to the zentrale, check the meter and indeed, the boat is below the depth that I set. And it keeps slowly sinking, but at an increasing rate of descent. I re-order depth for 160 metres and I see the guy adjust the dive planes but nothing happens, except us sinking faster. I secure from silent running and increase speed to 2 knots but this makes no difference.

180 metres... still sinking

190 metres... sinking ever faster

At 210 metres, I order to blow ballast. The boat begins to rise but the destroyer is now also overhead. It must have heard all my manoeuvres. Depth charges are dropped and I go to AK and turn to avoid them landing directly on me. At 160 metres I order to maintain depth and resume silent running. Again, the boat starts to slowly sink. I manage to arrest the dive again and at 130 metres, she seems to stabilize and able to hold her depth. This also seems enough to keep the destroyer from finding me and she gives up her search a little while later.

Still, that was a nasty surprise the game threw at me. It just goes to show that even when you think you're safe, "reality" pops up and punches you on the nose! It was a bit hairy, trying to stabilize the boat with the destroyer up there, but it sure kept me on my toes. Great for the immersion factor!

Anyone have similar nasty surprises?

The deeper you go the less control you have and as such must use increased engine revolutions to maintain said control which in turn raises your sound signature....all part of the excitement of being a Kaleun and having to weigh up the pros and cons of what actions to take in potentially dangerous situations to your boat and the crew.

SINK EM ALL!!

Yes, it made things a lot more intense during the get-away. The crew suddenly tensing up, LI saying we're too deep...

Really added to the immersion factor.

Did you crash dive and set another depth before reaching the preset depth of 70 metres for a crash dive? Were you also sinking stern first? If so, it might be a bug that has affected me on occasions. Can be hair raising trying to maintain depth by having to increase speed and at the same time trying to evade destroyers.

After ordering a crash dive I now always let my boat reach the preset 70 metres before ordering to go deeper.

Yes, I did. A destroyer came at me, all guns blazing, so I had to get below fast. He was quite far away but closing rapidly. As soon as the boat went under, I changed course and desired depth.

Could be a bug then. I thought it might be one of those random failures. Or maybe difficulty getting the boat in trim after a crash dive which I suppose could happen in real life.

Come to think of it, the boat had been fine up to 200 metres before. Only happened after the crash dive...

Yep sounds like the bug I mentioned. As I say, to avoid it in future, after a crash dive try and let your boat reach 70 metres before ordering a different depth.

There's also the V15E3 patch kit which has a "fix crash dive blues" option... it neatly edits that part of the exe to make that problem much less problematic (as well as some other handy fixes)
