Climbing the ladder to the conning tower?

I don't have a lot of time to play the game, being stuck trying to get up the ladder is a big pain. I know it should be an easy thing but so far no luck.

Can someone please put me out of my misery and tell what magic button I have to push?

If you are speaking of Silent Hunter 5, the trick is(if I recall correctly) to look
at the stairs, not up, when you go up to them.
