Default Woman, 92, oldest to stand trial for murder

A WOMAN, 92, has become the oldest woman committed to stand trial for murder in Australia, accused of bludgeoning and stabbing her wealthy 98-year-old husband to death, a report said today. Clara Tang, who allegedly killed Ching Yung Tang after 70 years of marriage in their Sydney apartment in March last year, has pleaded not guilty on the grounds of mental illness, the Sun-Herald said.
The elderly woman appeared in a local court last week and was ordered to stand trial in the Supreme Court on a date to be fixed.
Documents tendered by police reportedly detailed how the couple survived the Japanese invasion of China and the Mao's Cultural Revolution before moving from Shanghai to Sydney 30 years ago.
Tang, who suffers dementia, allegedly feared her husband was poisoning her food.
The newspaper said that when arrested, Tang was almost totally soaked in blood. Her husband had been stabbed twice in the stomach and his head was bludgeoned.
She was initially refused bail due to "the level of violence used and for the protection of the community", but police relented with Tang put under strict supervision in a nursing home ahead of her trial.

So then, what will happen here?
If found guilty, what then? 20 years in jail?
A mental institution? Under constant house arrest/supervision in the nursing home where she is residing?
I'm all for punishing or for a better word, holding accountable people for their crimes, but at the age of 92, what will they do?
I know, some of you will say "Well, age shouldn't have anything to do with wether a person should be charged if they are guilty" or the like.
I'm going to follow this closely.

Dunno if Australia even has capital punishment... but it would be a joke in this case. She probably won't even survive the wait.

But she's obviously not able to take care of herself, and is possibly a threat to others. I say possibly, because looking at her victim, I think most of us would have been able to safely stop her.

She just needs to be confined to a nursing home. Hopefully they'll reach some sort of plea agreement to let her do just that. Any sort of common criminal punishment wouldn't be effective in her case.

Dementia is a nasty thing. If it is in an advanced state you can't hold her accountable for the deed as her brain simply doesn't function properly anymore. Put her in a supervised nursing home for her remaining days.

Yea exactly.
Good call, my sentiments too.

So, I get called to a Hospital to transport this 95 year old lady to a geriatric psych facility. Which is basically a short term nuthouse for crazy old people.

Apparently she had called 911 from her home in town, and told the firefighters that responded that her mother wouldn't eat, and she's being trying to feed her for days. They searched the house and did not find anybody else there, so off to the hospital she goes for a psych evaluation.

We're bouncing down the road, the lady (pleasant old lady actually) and I are talking. I was asking her about what happened, and all she kept saying is "mother won't eat".

Few minutes later, she pulls out this fork (dunno where it came from), and says, "See, Mother won't eat". I look at the fork from across the truck, and theres this gunk on it.

I asked her, "What's on the fork?"

"catfood", she replied, "Mother won't eat!"

"Wait, who is Mother?"

"She's my cat! And I'm so worried because she hasn't eaten in days!"

Sooooo, yeah.... the firemen who were too busy to be bothered by an old lady got her stuck in a nuthouse.

Apparently she was sent home a few days later with an apology.

And a dead cat.
