UK 'to end direct aid to 16 countries'

The UK is to stop direct aid to 16 countries, including Russia, China and Iraq, papers seen by the BBC suggest.

A draft copy of the government's review of its overseas aid budget - due to be published this week - also reveals aid to India will be frozen.

But overall, the international development budget will rise by a third in this Parliament as a new approach focuses on value for money, it says.

The report states that aid spending is good for Britain's economy and safety.

Understandable in some cases at least. It is insane to still pay "develoepment aid" to China while their economy and cheap labour is flattening us with their cheap exports. Germany enthusiastically still accompanies this lunacy. We also should not pay developement aid to 3rd world regimes where the rich tyrants at the top take the cream, and we should stop support for all countries and people who stand for an ideology hostile to ours. They may not have an obligation to share our views - but in return we have no obligation to make them stronger so that they find it easier to challenge us.

Europeans are obsessed with committing all the above sins. They do so - at their own cost, acchieveing m,uch, much less than they make themselves to beoiueve. The bill is payed - by the common worker on the street, the tax-payer. Thank you, Mr. Superpolitician - we anyway have no need to keep our hard works' earnings for ourselves, and in our own country. So let's waste it to polish the superficial shine.

I agree with the previous speaker, and at this stage should U.K hold priority, to the country's best.

One could only hope such a thing could happen to the United States.

How many billions to we give to other nations?

How many good school lunches could that buy for US kids?

According to that the figure is $23.5bn which equates to about 0.18% of GDP. To put that in context the US military budget represents around 5% of GDP.

I agree, our tax dollars should work for americans. I read that 1 in 6 kids in America go to bed hungry. Get our house in order first.

When we were hit with Katrina, I would have loved the President to announce a temporary suspension of foreign aid and state that he had to take care of his own citizens first.

No leader should ever feel bad about helping his or her own citizens first.
