Last night when I engaged a Small Coal Tender (Grid AN 13)my torpedo missed but definatly hit somthing as I saw it for my self in the scope.. There was the usual splash mixed with a big fireball..
There was nothing recorded in my logs about anything else sunk. Could it of been a mine?

Torpedoes will explode randomly - blame it on the faulty detonators. 280kg of Hexanite will still give off a big flash even if you don't hit anything. I've seen it before as well.

Strange one this...unless there was another vessel behind the small coal tender that you overlooked which I doubt was the case ![]() |

Absolutely, yes!
I have duds switched off also, sadly, it only disable dud impact detonators. Dodgy magnetic triggers stay with you so you can watch a perfect shot just sail straight under the target and then go off a km or two later. Also, rough water can sometimes make a magnetic torpedo go 'pop' early. |

When the torpedo hits its maximum range (usually only applicable to electrics since their range is only 5km) it'll detontate regardless of what is there. This can be a frequent cause of misenterpeted satisfaction of getting a hit while attacking at long range. If you're 2km from the edge of convoy (first or last column) and you miss your target it can run its full length and end up detonating and give you a false positive that you've hit something in the middle of the convoy; when in fact it could have just exploded harmlessly in one of the lanes, or on the other side of the convoy.

Well, boogers! You learn something every day on this forum... never knew that. I always thought they just.. dunno, stopped and sank.
