Default Getting a lot of CTDs

I've recently started experiencing a lot of CTDs. I was playing Uboat Op Monsun for a while and came back to Fleetboats and loaded up TMO2 for the first time. The CTDs appear to be related to the sound.act file as the error message I get looks like this

AppName: sh4.exe AppVer: 1.5.0.0 ModName: sound.act
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 0000888d

Here are the mods I'm running:

1 TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2
2 RSRDC_TMO_V502 (includes the patch for TMO)
3 SCAF for RSRDC v502_2.0
4 Fixed_sensors_TMO-RSRDC
5 Custom Sound (a compilation of my favorite sounds)

Anything obvious I'm doing wrong??? I noticed some crashes that happened when running TMO and EAX sound so I got rid of EAX (a shame) but other than that, I can't figure out the problem.

Dignan, sounds like a classic case of mod soup, with a tip of the hat to the man who invented that term. It happens to everyone with a normal appetite for trying something new in Silent Hunter. Bits of mods get left in the code that conflict with each other, typically a command to plot a ship that isn't part of your present configuration.

Here's what I do. First of all, I maintain a pristine, write protected installation in its own directory, for instance \Wolves of the Pacific Pristine. I don't play that at all. It has no mods.

Then I have my playing directory \Wolves of the Pacific. When I find myself with mod soup, and it either has happened or will happen to everyone, I can restore the stock setup simply by uninstalling all my mods, then copying all the files from my pristine directory into my game directory. Reinstall the mods and carry on as if nothing bad had ever happened! You should never have to do a complete reinstall again.

Since both my directories and files in the pristine installation are write protected, I have to make sure that I write enable everything I copy into my playing directory. Ah, where's xcopy these days of the uberGUI?

Thanks for the tip RR. I just did a clean install and reinstalled the game and then all the mods but still have the problem. I'll try your idea if my harddrive can afford it.

It may be a problem with conflicting sound files in TMO and my own custom sound mod. Trial and error. I don't know why i can't just play the damn game instead of tinkering with mods constantly.

Thanks again

I agree, probably messed up some sounds, EAX has always worked fine.
I've added many sounds, mostly use the correct path and placement they should work. Also some time limits apply. Usually the problem is messing with a sound connected to the sub or an event..

I use Pouls sound with EAX, but took out all the non US sounds from Pouls and replaced them with others from the net. Also replaced electrical, glass breaking, hull noises. When my sub takes damage, it sounds like hell compared to what it was. I replaced the electric spark with a louder hum and have a guy screaming at the same time....really good stuff.

Thanks Armistead. When creating a custom sound mod do I need to include my own shl.dl file also? I never had these problems with TMO for 1.4. I'll redownload EAX for TMO to make sure I have the correct version.

I've noticed the crashes almost always happen when a shell or DC hits the water. I've read somewhere that TMO added a special sound of the DC hitting the water that can be heard from the sub. I think this is what's causing the crashes when I add my own sounds over the top.

Would reinstalling plus doing a registry clean possibly help this? I never used to have this problem. Thanks for your advice.

Also, your own sound mod sounds very interesting. Any chance of you uploading for us to try out?

Ok, here is something concrete I can ask the forum about changing sounds and experiencing CTDs.

So I downloaded Pouls sound mod which is fantastic. However, some of the speech files I want to edit.

For example, "returning to course" I get tired of hearing the captain from Das Boot scream "more or less, more or less that's not good enough"

-So I convert the file to wav format
-I open it in a sound editor and chop off the end of the sound bite to my liking.
-I re-encode/convert the file back to ogg and drop it back in the Poul sound mod and re-enable the mod.

When I go to the game and change course, thus activating this sound I get a CTD? Is there something I'm missing? I swear I used to do this all the time before I started running 1.5 and TMO2.0. Any ideas?
