TMO 2.0 with RSRD 100 realismn including map contacts off, left external camera on.I did this to mix things up since in patrol before in other career played with external camera on and map contacts off.Trying to get used to playing without map contacts again, adds to the simulation.Anyway...
March 1942, Marshall Islands near Eniwetok Atoll USS Shark-Porpoise Class Sank one lone freighter later afternoon on March 9 with deck gun after four torpedos exploded, forced to dive once to avoid aircraft, was only 40 miles from Eniwetok Atoll. The next morning while preparing for our daily dive(early war tactics) for submerged patrol, spotted a lone ship, turned out to be a Momi Class PB(formerly Momi class DD) While setting up, the Momi spotted us in the dawn light and was soon charging with a "bone in his teeth" We turned into him and I ordered a dive at 4200 yards when shell splashes began to bracket us(with EAX sound mond, the enemy shells approaching you sound AWSEOME , along with splahes) We charged in and had a good set up for a down the throat shot, at 600 yards I fired two Mark 14's, ordered a hard dive for 250 feet and left full rudder.As we passed 86 feet, a huge explosion occured, our torpedo had hit! I ordered scope depth and went outside for a look, one torpedo had missed(prob ran deep) other ran true and exploded under the DD just forward of the stern, she was soon sinking , we were like 300 yards away and she was drifting towards us since she made a hard port turn attempting to avoid our torpedos with no luck.After a run at ahead flank, was far enough to watch her sink via the scope(and external cam) Finished patrol with four ships down, including the DD.Difficult patrol due to no map contacts and torpedo malfunctions. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Bubblehead1980; 10-20-10 at 04:56 AM. |

![]() The DTTS is one of those times where your sweating it out, you know if it works your gonna be ok but if it fails you could be in for a really rough time. I love that feeling, but at the same time i'm kicking myself for getting into that position in the first place. Commanding a Porpoise Class only adds to the pucker factor because you know you can't escape to the depths like some of the other Fleetboats. I figure if i can master the P Class everything else will be easier. I'm currently up to May 1943 in the USS Tarpon and i'm going to try to stick it out for about another year before i upgrade boats. In Late 44 the Tarpon gets sent back stateside so in mid 44 i'll get my Gato/Balao but i love the challenge of the Porpoise Class. Only having 4 Tubes forces you to pick your targets wisely when you encounter a convoy and my crush depth is set to a realistic 323 ft so as soon as the fish leave the tubes i'm headed down and hoping the escorts can't find me. Attacking in bad weather is my primary method and i have even let a few nice targets slip by because i know in good weather its going to cost me my boat.

GJ bubble, when you time that zig you catch them broadside and really at the right angle that the torps work. Plus you did it the hard way cams off.

Actually he wasnt zigging, he headed straight for my scope, didnt try to zig until I fired two fish down his throat at 600 yards, just didnt have time to avoid them, thats how DTT shots went usually, they tried to turn away but often couldnt.DD's didnt zig in RL while going in for a depth charge run. I was surprised my torpedo didnt run deep, guess got lucky this time. |

Must've been a long shot? I know with TMO they'll come at you fast then go into zig pattern at about 1500 yards, unless you just happened to catch him coming straight on. Got lucky he did a lil zig, you would've hit his bow and he would've grunted and kept on a coming...

Yah. I've noticed hitting a ship in the bow (any ship, really), doesn't do much in TMO. Just pisses them off, usually.
Oh, and btw. What on earth is this radar mod people are talkin about? |

See this is where sub warfare gets confusing, I've read a ton of material but never heard about them zigging on depth charge runs but Beach is a credible source, eh who knows. |

Read the same thing in a few books, but usually they had a fix on you, so smart enough to zig on the run, one to dodge and the other to spread the pattern. I'll try to find that link on JP DD tactics written by a JD DD captain. |

323 feet is rather unfair to yourself , in RL Porpoises could make it pretty deep if forced.Currently reading "The Luck of The Draw" by Captain C Kenneth Ruiz, he was an officer aboard the USS Pollack(Porpoise Class) in 42 and 43...they went to 500 feet and survived.They made a fast dive to avoid a DD and their bow planes wouldnt rig out, they couldnt stop their descent, finally hit 500 feet, some rivets and things went flying but they survived and they sub was repaired and sent back to action after the patrol. |

I'm not so sure. I thought, with TMO anyway, you have a point of no return. If you cross that point by one foot, doesn't matter what you do your sub will be destroyed, once you hear things breaking, it's over, may take a minute, but it's over. For instance, if it's 600ft with the Gato, not saying it is or isn't, you can hit 590 ft and run perfectly, hit 601 and nothing you can do about it.
Course a few degrees of damage can change that ratio. |
