Default New System Question

Well thanks to our union winning a grievance settlement with our employer (USPS), we were awarded a decent cash reward. Not enough for a new car, but more than enough for a shiny new rig Anyway, the machine is comeing with Windows7. I've been reading a few posts of people haveing some probs. with W7 and I am becomeing somewhat nervous. I understand about makeing a folder on the C/drive and installing the game there. What I want to know is, if it is really needed to install DX9, instead of useing DX11 which I'm pretty sure is comeing installed. Any advice for a troublefree transition would be appreciated

Yes, it is necessary to install DX9 in order to run SHIV correctly. It will not harm anything else. Follow the installation instructions in this thread you should have no problems. I have six different versions of SHIV with accompanying mods and they all run just fine under Win 7. I'm running Win 7 Ultimate and really like it as an OS. If you should run into difficulties come back here and post your problems, this forum is a great place to get help and advice.

Are you guys really sure about that? I know the box says DX9, but is SH4 worse than SH3? Is it a step backwards? Does DX10 and DX11 throw out features from DX9, so things don't work with them?

SH3's box says DX9 or higher. SH4's doesn't, but that is the way it usually works. Yes, older DOS games won't run on newer machines and need DosBox, but newer versions of DX should run SH4 just fine.

My SHIV install didn't run stable until I installed the DirectX 9 that came with SHIV. Missing DLL perhaps or lack of compatiblity?

Anyway, you won't "harm" your Win7 by adding v9...

SHIV requires DirectX9 and you should install the one on the disc. That does not mean you miss out DirectX11, so don't worry.

I can recommend creating a partition on your harddrive for games/data etc. so you have seperate systemdrive and datadrive.
It will save you a lot of work when/if you in the future wants to reinstall or restore Windows 7.

Windows 7 and Silent Hunter runs extremely well and troublefree.

Unless you install in programfolder. Or use the Steam version...

Ooooh!

How about a sneak-peek at your new system's specs.

Fair enough! Here's the meat and potatoes: First off, this is a Cyberpower Gamer Xtreme XI which I upgraded slightly from the base configuration. The CPU is an Intel Core i7-960 @3.20gh

MB: Asus P6T Intel X58 Chipset SLI/Crossfire

Memory: 6gigs Corsair Dominator DDR3

GPU: 2x ATI HD 5850 in Crossfire mode

Sound: Creative Labs X-FI Xtreme Gamer

PSU: Corsair PSU @950wts.

I opted for the maximum number of 120mm case fans available, but the CPU is cooled by an Asetek 570LX liquid cooling system.

Well there it is. The major parts that is. This is my first true gameing system which I hope will last me for a while!

Sweeeet! That sounds like an awesome setup. Good luck with your new system. I'll bet you can't wait to try out SHIV on it. Oooooh, I'm starting to drool just thinking about it.
