Default New Windows package

Will SH III work with Windows 7. I seem to be getting a protection alert that appears to say only older windows versions will work. Wanted to reload the old game and the Gray Wolves mod withit.

Windows 7 works fine with SHIII. The problem is with the older DVDs they included StarForce DRM (copy protection) that does not work with Windows 7.

Now there are some tutorials around that claim to be able to work around this problem.

Myself, I went to www.direct2drive.com and re-purchased the game for $10 - the download does not have StarForce and installed with no problems.

I did the same and had endless problems getting it to work. 32bit or 64bit Windows 7?

Spend $5, buy the UK Focus DVD edition that's sans Starforce and already patched (I'm sure there'd be a US budget equivalent). Install it outside of your Program Files folder. Make sure your monitor is running at 60Hz (not 59 - apparently this causes problems).

Effortless. Easily the best investment I have made.

64-bit.

One other things: At the end of the install it tries to install GameSpy or something or other - everyone says to cancel out of that part of the install.

GameShadow, I think it is. IIRC it's a "utility" designed to make sure you get all available official Ubisoft updates/patches to the game. There won't be any more of those for SH3 so it's just a waste of resources to install the thing.

I bought the $10 Encore version. Came with SH2 and SH3 combined, no DRM, fully patched. Wouldn't run. Then I bought the $10 game from D2D, no DRM, fully patched. Wouldn't run.

I have Win 7 64Bit with SH3 running on 1920x1200 Res, so Im surprise your game will not run. What problems are you encountering? I have the Steam version of the game and run it with our problems.

Getting cheaper by the day.

Mines in the bottom drawer awaiting the next rig purchase (Windows 7):

"Only 2 left in stock--order soon (more on the way)" seems to imply that there's still a market for the game.

I can't understand why installing it on Win7 32 or 64 bit is so effortless for some, yet so painful for others? I can't recall this phenonemon with any other operating system (outside the easily avoided Vista installation problems caused through users not understanding UAC).

As I simply installed it like any other game (no GameShadow, as suggested above), I'm out of ideas.

I got SH3 from Steam for £5 here in the UK, as my old copy had starforce on it so would not run on Win7. Works fine with all my mods installed.
