weird question regarding hydrophones and being pinged

Why is it that if I'm listening to an escort closing on me I can clearly hear their screws, but I can't hear them pinging? I'd think it'd be easier to hear the pings via the hydrophone than it would be by ear from inside the hull.

You know, after playing this game for so long You'd think I'd know the answer to this but I can honestly say I've never really noticed.

I am able to hear the pings in game but since I seldom use the hydrophones when so near to my prey I can't say I've heard them through the hydrophone.

I will check this out when on my next patrol though.
