Hi all,
I have a question about Dangerous Waters. I'm wanting to expand my naval sim horizons. I've heard that this game is good but wanted to ask, should I buy it? (thats if I can find it anywhere!) I know its fairly old (2005 if I'm not mistaken?) but was wondering several things; 1) What are the graphics like? I mean, I know it'd be impossible to compare to SH4/5, but how does it compare to, say, SH3? are the water effects OK and all that? 2) How realistic is it? Is it an immersion simulator or more of an action game? 3) Hows the learning curve, am I going to need to read the manual 5 time and then go and get the degree to play, or will I be able to gently ease into it? 4) I know its only cosmetic, but are there any interiors to the ships/subs that you play as? 5) What are your general opinions of the game? marks out of 10? Many thanks in advance guys, ![]() Sev. |

First let me answer all your questions about the graphics: the graphics are bad. You cant compare it with sh3 in no way. The graphics where outdatet before the release of the game. And no you have no interiors.
About the realism, its hard to tell, it feels somehow realistic to me but i never served on board of a submarine and many of the technical datas and systems are classified. You need to invest a lot of time into the game if you really want to master all of the stations, but you will find many good tutorials at Bill Nichols Site and you can do it station by station, you can learn one station while you let the others managed by the autocrew. My general opinion is that i love it. Its somehow an evergreen and i for myself play it sometimes every day, then i dont touch it for months but then i play it again. you can try the Demo first to get a feeling for the game: http://www.sonalystscombatsims.com/d...ters/demo.html Then you will see if you like it or not. There must be some tutorials for the demo mission also, cant find it atm but you should be able to google for it ![]() |

If you're looking for eye candy DW IS NOT for you.
But if you're looking for an experience to taste modern naval engagement then it may be for you. Just don't expect anything from the graphics in DW. Gameplay wise I'm fond of the game and the mods help a lot too. Graphics wise well I don't expect anything much from it so it's kind of gorgeous in its own way especially after mod such as DWX.

Its an action game only if you design missions to be action packed and use very lax rules such as "fire as many torpedoes as you like on any target". ![]() Quote:
Of course if you have a friend that already knows how to play, organizing a series of multiplayer missions is the best way to learn. But if this is not available then you'll have to read and read and read. Quote:
You have 3d-views when on the bridge (of the frigate), and on the sail of a surfaced sub. Quote:
You have 3 basic alternatives, use Lwami which is a mod that changes the database with more "realistic" values but does nothing to address the limited number of playable units or adding new features. Then there is Alfa Tau 3 which is based on Lwami and adds new playable units and new features. And finally the new kid on the block is DWX also known as Reinforce Alert mod. This you can consider as a total conversion mod of DW. It goes way way beyond what even Alfa Tau 3 had done. It truly transforms DW into a great simulator and gives the frigate a first class status. |

There used to be a demo out there somewhere, but I don't know of SCS still has it available.

Couldn't agree more, never have so many trees been needlessly butchered. The manual for the original game in the series 688i Hunter Killer published by EA was far superior and has full mission walkthroughs which clearly explained not only what to do but crucially why you were doing these things. Why Sonalysts didn't do something similar for DW is beyond me and may actually go along way to accounting for why the game didn't do very well in the marketplace.

It's $15 on Steam, or for $30 you can get the whole pack of all the similar games: 688, Sub Command, Fleet Command (pretty fun) and DW.

It is well worth it. I haven't played it in years, but it is a great game.
