Default TC, the devil?

Time compression is a necessary evil I realize, but I am finding I am a bit of a TC addict.
To the point where I take some of the fun out the game by taking it too far. Massive TC values between encounters. Zig zagging across the map (between hydrophone dips) at what must equate several thousand KMs an hour. Find a target and then use low level TC to speed the encounter up until everything is ready for a shot.
Think I am going to make an effort to cut down on my TC addiction, I think it may make the game more enjoyable.

How often do you guys use TC?

I'm pretty much the same way. When I do get to play I dont have hours on end to do so.

Then again I'm alot more 'casual' than alot around here.

I thought this would be a rant about how TC got you killed.... and it does...

1024 to get from A to B , then the highest I go when hunting is 128. Sometimes I'll read a book and do it at x1.

I use it to get to a ptraol zone, probably like many people, I'm sure. In the assigned zone, I drop it to 128x until I make contact or relocate.

Once I make contact, 32x is the max I will run.

I never take it over 512 myself, and even then I feel it's risky and I dont stay there for long. But then im one who never hurries anything along. And yep I drive the same way, and can't understand why everyone else on the road is willing to risk life and limb to save a few minutes, and all they do is get to the next light and stop. And I show up usually just seconds later to the same spot and we then leave that same spot at the same time.

I also dont push elevator buttons if they are already lit, nor push walk buttons at the crosswalk more than once.

Amen to that, SabreHawk... especially the buttons at the crossings

Like most others, I use 256-1024x to get to interesting areas, making hydrophone 'listenings' every few hours if I feel I am in an area that might see traffic. When I make contact I won't go above 32x. I've had too many mishaps when in visual range of ships and trying to save time by upping the TC. Before you know it the convoy are zig-zagging, or the DDs are giving you a broadside. So now I take it nice and steady, and enjoy the slow build up before the fireworks start

I used to do the same thing a lot in SHIII pre GWX. Before 1942 there's really no threat to TC'ing all about the map, surfaced or submerged. And since most of the ships were singles, not convoys, I found myself in 516x until I found a contact, get into position at 4x, notch it to 16x as I waited at all stop for a firing solution, fired at 1x, then after the kill back to 516x on a new waypoint course.

It got almost formulaic, and I was only spending ~2 minutes per each attack (time from torpedo launch to impact) in actual time.

You're right, it does take some of the fun out of the game. I can't imagine a way around it though- if the game is easy enough for it to be done, it will be done. Luckily mods made encounters a little more challenging, diverse and worthwhile. In short order it will be the same for SHV.

I often look at Silent Hunter games like I look at Dwarf Fortress -- something you launch and get running, then just leave in the background while you work or browse the web or whatever.

That, and going from high to low TC in a hurry is a bitch on my slow-ish comp. Has ruined many an attack for me.

1024 in transit, 512 or 256 when patrolling.
And, like many others here, never more than 32 after coming into contact with a target.
