Campaign scripters.
Be mindful of crew ratings. They have a tremendous impact on the performance of warships. Here is some hard data for you: (All numbers plus or minus 200 meters or so.) Test run 1: Daylight Parameters: - Stock AI settings - Player sub bows on to a destroyer at a distance of 15KM away. - Wind speed at 15 kts - No fog. Results: Destroyer crew rating 0: -> Max visual distance of 6700 meters. Destroyer crew rating 1: -> Max visual distance of 7800 meters. Destroyer crew rating 2: -> Max visual distance of 9200 meters. Destroyer crew rating 3: -> Max visual distance of 12,500 meters. Destroyer crew rating 4: -> Max visual distance of 13,700 meters. Test run 2: Night time Parameters: - Stock AI settings - Player sub bows on to a destroyer at a distance of 15KM away. - Wind speed at 15 kts - No fog. Results: Destroyer crew rating 0: -> Max visual distance of 550 meters. Destroyer crew rating 1: -> Max visual distance of 850 meters. Destroyer crew rating 2: -> Max visual distance of 1400 meters. Destroyer crew rating 3: -> Max visual distance of 4300 meters. Destroyer crew rating 4: -> Max visual distance of 6700 meters. |

That scale is wacky - and explains a lot if it is similiar to SH3/4.
No way a lookout on a ship could see a bows on sub at near 7km in the dark. One question - what speed was the sub going? Does increased speed increase the distance you can be spotted? I don't have SH5 (and won't for what looks to be a while) so I am curious. Max should be maybe 3- 4km out - well outside a good shooting distance - with numbers like that - an elite crew simply NEGATES the possibility of a Night Surface attack. The jump between 2 and 3 is way to big. Since supposedly this game is more moddable - can those numbers be changed?

having acutally been detected has nothing to do with those numbers. Those numbers only represent the maximum visual distance of the AI that i observed in the stated conditions. Unlike Sh3 and Sh4, you can watch the sensor rings in the map grow or shrink, depending on conditions.
