Fear of Flying

We will be taking off in less than 48 hours for a flight to visit family, and I am sure I am going to die.

I love flying. I always try to get a window seat so I can observe the distant ground slide underneath us. But in the days leading up to any flight I begin to feel apprehensive. And there's always this sense of foreboding that some terrible thing will happen to the plane, it will depart controlled flight, and we will all be smashed into bloody shreds shortly thereafter.

This fear of flying thing is a real pisser.

I'm flying gliders in my spare time and can assure you that planes are safer than cars.

Commercial planes are build to tolerate extreme stress (Did you ever see tests when they tie a plane to the ground and lift the wings with cranes until they brake? It's amazing how flexible they are

.). They can still fly with one engine out (if it is a two engined aircraft), they have warning systems for stalls, collisions with other traffic and terrain and last but not least there are two professionals sitting in the cockpit.

It is very unlikely that anything will happen.

Well, the planes I'm flying are much smaller (and much quieter

) but the physics are the same and I can tell you a plane does not just fall out of the air. Something really serious has to go wrong for one to come down.

I too feel a bit uncomfortable before flight, however it does help if your with friends/family to distract yourself with.

Airliner Accidents?
a whole lot have to go wrong in a chain of events for it to come down to that.

I like flying, except maybe for the carbon footprint.

Flying, except on a cheap flight where you are treated as "cattle" ...

I think what makes us still uncomforteable is the fact that air and water are not places where Humans are meant to be. looking down and realizing you are NOT on terra firma (either in air or in water) always gives a mental kick, and a reminder to be alert.

It works for minutes - untill i fall asleep, smiling, listening to the turboprop or Jet engines.

Funny coincidence, i got a new machine days ago, and as i write this, on the second monitor is the FSX installer finishing its thing...

Moin,

the pilots are the best life insurance you can imagine. The guys in the front seats don´t want to loose control either and will do everything in their power to keep the bird flying unless it´s meant to touch down. So, sit back and relax. Assuming they do their job well, the only uncertain factor remaining is ATC.
