Funny name, not a funny thing they are protesting about.

The Australian Government wants to filter the internet to protect our kids from the big bad nasty internet. They say they are only after the real bad stuff but will not tell the public what has been blacklisted or why. Blacklisting occurs after a complaint is posted to ACMA which then decides if it is on the list or not.

Of course the paedophiles and weird buggers will still be able to share their crap with other means like e-mail, newsgroups BBS snailmailing disks etc. whilst Joe Public goes blindly along with this ridiculous idea thinking alls right with the world and that their kids are safe.

The filter doesn't stop you using a proxy to get around it, it doesn't stop what it is supposed to stop and yet 80% of surveyed Australian's support this nonsense. That said at least 91% of them have the good sense to say they want to know what is on the filter and why.

What make me puke most of all is the Minister for Communications holding China up as a shining example of how internet filtering can work!

My biggest concern is how far the Government will go to "protect" us in the future. Lets say an anti-violence lobby group floods ACMA with complaints about a site that discusses war and warfare such as Subsim?

What about foreign news services that do not match the views of the complainant and what if the complainant is the Government itself? Does ACMA have the independence to say bugger off Government that's not bad enough?

And there goes your liberty. Next thing will be critical bloggers and then political opponents. If you allow your government to decide what you are allowed to watch and what not you have already lost your liberty. Why is EVERYONE censored if it is only to protect children? Why don't you as an adult have the right to say I don't want to be censored and I'm older than 18 I can watch all the weird stuff I like (except if it is criminal contend like child porn, rape etc.). Why not developing a single browser that will be censored that you can install on you machine that your kid is using while the one that is only used by you has a normal one without the censorship?
Who are your politicians to decide what you are allowed to watch and what not?

And we germans know what we are talking about. We have Mrs von der Leyen and her infamous "STOP" Sign.

But normally, naked bodies are not considered a big threat to children over here.

What I will never get is why especially the female body should pose such a threat to the mental health of children.
Are there really people who think that you will grow up to be a serial killer or sex offender if you have seen a female breast as a 6yr old?

Its not something I ever expected to see coming out of Australia either.

Its not so much nakedness that's the problem, nudity on TV etc is not really a problem, its what the naked people get up to that is being filtered.
