Default Crew Efficiency

While this won't answer all of the questions about crew ratings I think it is a good start.

Efficiency Rating

While at port, All new crewman not assigned to your boat have an efficiency rating of 100/100 (+0) (not doing anything is very efficient) when assigned to the boat depending on their abilities and rank efficiency will go up or down along with any bonus from the crew on the boat.

The numbers 100/117 (+0) the first being current efficiency the second highest rating possible and of course bonus from various sources.

With the crew at Battle Stations

Now the XO effects the whole crew bonus in efficiency most cases with an increase and surprisingly decrease and in some instances no effect at all. If you remove the XO efficiency numbers for the majority of the crew drop.

Remove all officers from the Control room and the whole crew efficiency drops further, note the Officers efficiency has increased when removed to the deck gun and all the crew in the control room has lost any bonus.

The same applies to removing all Deck Officers from a compartment the crew in that compartment looses any bonus, but will retain a bonus if the Control room officers are still in place.

Now depending on a crewmans abilities this will determine their efficiency for a given compartment and just because of a high ability as a mechanic does not mean his efficiency will be better in the engine room it might be higher as a torpedo man even though his gun ability is lower than mechanical. I think this may have to do with the other crewman on his team, so perhaps balancing abilities amongst a team will improve efficiency.

Of course this is just a quick run through on some of this stuff and there are other variables at play but in general this is what I came up with. Also I'm not an expert on this, these are just my observations any positive input is welcome

While at Battle stations
XO effects the entire crew efficiency bonus.
Crewman may have better efficiency rating in a different compartment than their highest ability would suggest.
While at battle stations, Deck officers with a rating higher than 100 their compartment suffers minimal bonus loss if XO is gone.
Crewman do not have individual bonus (+0)

Well, that's interesting to say the least, I never actually looked at the effect the brass hats had on the men. What I'm curious about is the skills - I assumed guns was just for guns, mechanical was for loading torpedoes, is it a combination of the two and does electrical have anything to do with it? Is a high watchman rating or a high "leadership" rating more important for the enlisted men in the control room and conning tower?

One thing I do at the start of any career, look at all the Seamen 3rd (no reknown required) with high numbers and recruit them into the damage control section, then hunt down the stumblebums (like a guy on the bridge with a watchman rating of 25) and replace them. Always wondered what a Seaman 3rd with a leadership 70 was good for.

I don't remember who posted this or where the thread is but I copied it as a quick reference quite a while back

Torpedoe Compartment-effected by Mechanic and Guns stats.

Engine compartment-effected by mechanic and electric stats.

Command compartment-effected by Mechanic, Electric, and Watchman stats.

Sensor compartment-effected by Electric and Watchmen stats.

Damage Control is effected by Mechanic, Electric, and Guns Stats.

Officers slots are located in the Command Room and give bonus to the entire vessel.

Leaders slots give bonus to the compartment

Damage Control appears to favor the engine Specialization Qualification. pro-tip for those who get damaged often, put a Engine specialist as your Damage Control leader.

Thanks, copied that to a text file, maybe I can tweak my crew for faster torpedo reloading now.

everything abit above that you copied is actualy all u need to know.
plus that efficiency of all Deck is efected by good high skilled and hi Leadership skilled Deck Officer who boosts Efficiency of less experienced crew, their wiling to know and etc

PLus, after Patrol or two you will notice that in example two sailors who had from begining same low rank, same Skill-Talnt, and almoust same stats, will develope completely differently, and some will gain more Skills some not, no amtter they will have same rank and "climb" with rnk-points equily, so then time comes to Promote and give Proffesion choose wisely

ofcourse you dont have to do this, your torpedos will shoot, then in combat stations you Sub will dive fast, but anyway its ineteresting to develope your own small experienced highly efficient proffesional army
