Default What do we all think of this setup?

  • Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9550 (4x 2.83GHz/12MB L2 Cache/1333FSB
  • ASUS P5KPL-CM -- Intel G31 Chipset w/6-channels, Gb LAN, S-ATA 3Gb/s, USB 2.0, Single PCI-E MB
  • 4 GB [2 GB X2] DDR2-800 PC6400 Memory Module - Corsair-Value
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 - 1GB - Single Card
  • 700 Watt Power Supply
I'm mainly concerned with building a new SH5 computer and keeping it under $1000, but I do play games of all types.

Good, bad, indifferent?

Default GT220 Video card

That is a lot of computer to put a nonperforming GT220 into. Check performance and design specs on the internet. I run a GeForce 9800GTX+ and Nvidias new GT250 comes pretty close. I doubt a GT220 would run the game very well if at all. The GT250 carrys a very affordable price tag.
This is my opinion only. There are far better performers out there for not much more money. Keep in mid when you purchase a new card the resolution you want to run. A GT220 on a 22" monitor at 1680x1050 native will fail terribly. The internet is full of factual information. Just Google GT220 and you will be on your way to the world of enlightenment.........

Default RAM

There are all flavors of RAM and 1gig of DDR can not come close to 512mb of GDDR3. Please consider the core clock, shader clock and processor cores along with the memory data rate and others. There are a lot of ingredients necessary to make a "good stew"........Respectfully, Doug

Thanks for your input. I'm not super computer savvy, so I'll take all the advice I can get! Thanks again

Bump the board to a P35 chipset and get a decent graphicscard.

I'm running a Q9550 and 4GB DDR2-800 on a P35 board myself, and I'm not worried about having to upgrade anytime soon.

(if your concern is SH5, I'd say 9800GT or HD 4770 minimum. Next step up for Nvidia is the GTS 250, which is a rebranded 9800 GTX+. Then GTX 260 etc.)

I am running a 260 - and its a great card for the money. Definitely avoid the 220 - as its really 2-3 year old tech in a new box. The 260 is a rebrand as well, but its got enough oomph to get you thru a couple of years yet.
