Default Deploying Bold

What's the best way to deploy Bold? Go fast, deploy, turn and drop to 2 knots? Or deploy and jet away at high speed for a short time and then creep away? Any thoughts or experience with this defensive tool?

There are a few methods but I prefer your first option

It depends on the situation.

You want to distract one fast incoming DD?
Release the bold and speed up as long as the DD is going fast. Head away and rig for silent as soon as necessary.

If there is enough distance you may want to impress your crew and head directly for the DD and pass it! You are in his deaf zone now and have the opportunity to keep on going fast. He'll start to zig zag until he reaches the bold. Now rig for silent and watch the DD depthcharging the bold. At this point you should be beyond his sensors screen. Be aware he may be coming your way again while sailing back to course or convoy! If he goes fast you are safe - otherwise you should stop all engines and wait until he passed you.

The DD is close and already serching for you?
Wait until you know he's got you on sensors. Speed up, head away and release a bold. Go to periscope depth as fast as possible and rig for silent.
The ASDIC will search the bold in the depth and you may be quite safe at periscope depth. It's a 50:50 chance the DD is attracted by the bold.

Remember to check the time whenever releasing a bold to know how long it is active. The moment the bold fades the DD will start his general sensor sweep again.
If one escort is hunting for you and you release a bold a second escort may be called for help.

Remembering that depth is your friend I usually release the bold in a knuckle (high speed turn) while also diving, as soon as I reach ~90° (or whatever I deem safest, reduced profile etc) from my original course I 0 the rudder, rig for silent running and maintain my dive allowing my residual speed to carry me deeper as I creep away. Sometimes later I'll have to repeat this while reducing depth, this can be handy somethings as it can put enough distance between you and a lone DD so that you can get off a snap shot from your stern tube and put the bugger in his place.
