A fascinating look at the culture that lives in the drainways of Las Vegas.
I cant help but think though its only a matter of time a summer storm hits and drowns them all ![]() Quote:

Whoa, it's like Fallout 3! I wonder if those tunnel-dwellers carry leveled loot.....

I give them credit. To bad about the drug issue for some.
The ecoonomy has driven alot of decent people to tent citys and other enclaves to ride it out. This country has got to put people back to work. It's at least fortunate children weren't brought up in that article. Any conditions like this where you live ? |

We dont have any flood tunnels or any other superstructure like that here what we do have is a lot of wooded areas. The homeless gather in small 'tribes' and live in the woods in shacks / tents made from stuff they gather up in the waste bins. Bits of plyood, cardboard, sheets of plastic for a roof.
My city is what might be considered 'homeless friendly' and its not uncommon to read in the morning paper that homeless man No. 1 stabbed and killed homeless man No. 2 in an argument over a piece of cocane. By homeless friendly I mean there is a lot of social activists, a homeless shelter, an outreach program, etc. The police are instructed to more or less leave them alone while they stand on street corners with 'will work for food signs'. So naturally alot of homeless are drawn to the region. Saddest thing I ever saw was some poor bastard passed out in the grass in the hot sun beside the road as cars just wizzed by shaking their heads. I stopped and went to check on the guy, he was unconcious and un-responsive. I called 911 and an ambulance showed up and whisked him off to the em room. Dont know what happened to him after that. Then there was an incident where a hermit homeless man had lived in a small spit of woods amongst a residential neighborhood. He lived there for several years, maybe 10. A lot of people 'knew' him and where he lived. People would chat with him and give him some money and or food occassionally. He was a bit off but harmless but I would often see him near the local gas station chatting up somebody for hours on end with his huge gallon sized coffe cup in hand he carried everywhere. Well progress came knocking on the hermits little piece of paradise one day in the form of a bulldozer to clear the trees for an apartment complex. It was enevitable only a matter of time. The hermit did not take kindly to 'his' domain being invaded, became quite aggressive, and proceeded to beat the living crap out of the bulldozer driver with a piece of rebar. The cops responded and hauled the hermit away. Never saw him after that.

Reminds me of a guy who lived in the City of San Fernando in Southern CAl.
He had built a small shack on rail road property and the RR let him stay. You would see him all over town picking up pop bottles, they were glass back then worth two cents each. He was very clean and polite for his situation, and never begged but people did give him money or in some cases pop bottles. In reality he was sort of the town mascot. When he finely passed away the RR tore down his shack and found over thirty thousand dollars in it. That is a lot of money for the late 1950's Where he got that kind of money is a mystery. Magic
