Default What rules are there when ships got a name

I know that the carrier got their name from your president that have been elected. e.g: USS George H.W Bush (CVN-77)

USS NIMITZ, is what I know, the only carrier, that hasn't got a name from an early president

I know that your Battleships used to get name from your states
e.g: USS Massachusetts, USS Colorado

What is the rules when it comes to (heavy)cruises, Destroyers a.s.o

Gotta have money to build a carrier first. And I wouldn't hold my breath on that fact either, wouldn't plan on a William Jefferson Clinton being built either. Oh and that link seems a wee bit old, navys fault not your, they havent named the 3rd boat of the Seawolf class yet. Hell the Jimmy Carters' been built and transferred out to Bangor years ago.

There's a new Carrier under construction

USS Gerald R. Ford(CVN-78)

In my latest issue of "illustrerad Vetenskab"= illustrated Science, there's an article about this coming new carrier

Even thou it's gonna be bigger and more powerfull, it's crew will be less than ordinary

A fairly long read but it answers your questions and comes from the source: http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq63-1.htm

There are two other Nimitz class carriers not named after presidents. Carl Vinson named after a Congressman. John C. Stennis named after a Senator.

Basically, destroyers are named after people, cruisers are (were) named after cities (Some of the older, big nuke cruisers were named after states like battleships), though there are some exceptions. The Ticonderoga class cruisers are mostly named after battles.

In the WW2 heyday of cruisers, light cruisers were named for cities at large; heavy cruisers were named for state capitals.

Oh, the Alaska class 'Large Cruisers' (Arguably either weaker Battlecruisers or the most powerful heavy cruisers ever) were named after US territories (Alaska, Guam, Hawaii, Philippines, Puerto Rico and Samoa, though only the first two were completed).
