Default So I went and bought 10 copies of SH3..

From Newegg. I heard this was the non-Starforce version, so hopefully I didnt screw up. Gonna keep 1 and maybe another for a backup. The rest I'm slowly giving away to friends that havent played it.

(Then of course I see SH5 is coming out in 2010, ah well.)

Anyway...

I've never played it, and finally have the chance. I assume the correct course of action is install CD to non-Program Files location (using Vista 64-bit), patch latest patch, install a fantastic mod or 2 and I'm good to go?

Any mod recommendations if you're looking for the best visual/content-full experience/max realism?

edit: I'm leaning towards GWX...I'm hoping I dont have to navigate rough waters worrying about mod compatibility...

An idea. Why don't you donate a few to SubSim for contest prizes ?

Firewall has a good point! As far as mods go you definitely HAVE to go with SH3+GWX+SH3Commander+JGSME!!!!

Looks like this isnt going to be that easy -- the install process I mean.

Disc is 1.4...not 1.4b...and the patch page is confusing. I'd like to install the higher resolution fix...is that right after the patch and before Commander and GWX? Do I really need the Commander? I assume it isnt bundled with GWX...yet the jgsme one is....

edit: oh and my installer for the disc is asking if I want to install window media 9 codecs :p Says it was required, but I'm gonna take the chance and say it isnt :p

2nd edit: hmm, some patcher program called gameshadow that was part of the process appears to be broken/useless...guess I'll be deleting that.

Thanks for the welcome

I think what I've done so far is:

1. Installed DVD, ignored codecs and Direct X. DVD appeared to be 1.4, not 1.4b....the patch I found on the net failed so I assume this DVD is the latest version.

2. Installed the resolution fix.

3. Downloaded and installed Commander 3.2, then the GWX fix for it.

4. Downloaded and installed GWX 3.0

Looks like your getting things sorted out.

Ok then, if you already have a patched version then do as I had said to you in #8 ( Forget about # number 2 ). Just start loading GWX with GWX3_Commander_Files.exe.

I recommend strongly while you're in the process, that you carry on your install with SH3 Commander :
SH3 Commander Setup
GWX3 files for SH3 Commander 3.2 Setup
SH3 Commander files for GWX 3.0 Setup

and JSGME :
JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler Setup

They are a must to my opinion, and it takes secons.

Good luck with your install.

You're getting a lot of bad advice here.

Your first instinct was correct: your version is already patched. Do NOT install patch 1.4b.

A quick explanation, as I was part of the 1.4 patch test team: After 1.3 they decided it needed a fourth patch. We tested 1.4, they changed it a little and dubbed it 1.4b. Unfortunately if you load it it only says 1.3 on the changefiles. But it says 1.4 on the loading screen when you boot the game up.

Newer versions come already patched, and yes it is the very latest greatest 1.4b patch, as 1.4 was never released to the public. So you're good to go.

SH3 Commander is an external tool which works around the game to give you some of the greatest options you can imagine. It is compatible with any mod or supermod, so it is highly recommended. GWX3 will greatly add to your game experience; SH3 Commander will greatly add to your career experience.

Good luck and good hunting.

Thanks for the confirmation! I may give Commander another go.

Well, as soon as I figure out the proper install order...guess I should look at the Grey Wolves website again since I intend to keep using GWX...

Install Commander before or after GWX, tis up to you, but don't forget the CFG file and use Commander to start/load your first patrol.
