This short animation represents the result of a diploma work of an engineer student at a university in Zurich. It represents all of one day's global commercial flight movements, basing on data from February 6th, 2008. The day is compressed into 72 seconds. They found out that at any given point of time in a day, around 10.000 aircraft are in mid-air around all the globe. They now try to convert the software creating the animation from the raw data so that it can be used for traffic jam prevention and control of road traffic. TCAS anyone? ![]() P.S. full screen via the small icon in the bottom right corner.

It didn't suprise me to see the volume of traffic over Europe and the USA, but I was suprised at the amount over Japan.

Even without that given Japans dearth of raw materils and high end product export levels I would have thoughtthe traffic to be far higher than that shown in the graphic. edit to add in relation to the quote . Generally speaking when you put a 747 on a run the main usage is as a quick cargo shipment. JAL always did very good passengers fares because the Cargo was making the profit and passengers were just a bonus , which was a major factor in choosing the various 747s due to their easily adaptable load configuration |
