Default Priceless

This is what grinds my gears.

Recently Michelle Obama went to serve food to the homeless at a government funded soup kitchen.

Cost of a bowl of soup at homeless shelter: $0.00
Having Michelle Obama Serve you your soup: $0.00
Homeless person receiving a government funded meal while taking a picture of the first lady using his $500 Black Berry cell phone: Priceless

There are some things money can't buy, for everything else there are your tax dollars.

======
some time ago, i was at a grocery store in the Dallas area where i waited in line behind a welfare recipient who had two grocery carts.

one cart contained about $150 worth of groceries which he proceeded to pay for with his food stamps.

the second grocery cart contained about $100 worth of various bottles of liquor which he paid for in cash.

the system DOES NOT WORK.

the best public welfare system is called a JOB!

Yea imagine that. It could mean that one day the US might have to cut down on the number of useless wars around the planet.

could you explain what your "useless wars" scenario has to do with individuals in abusing the welfare programs?

That's your opinion, and it stinks of baseless claims.

As for the article, I agree. Welfare should have a time limit unless there is good reason for their not to be.

A better idea, welfare should come with drug and alcohol testing. Most companies these days require one to get a drug test to get a paycheck, so why should welfare idiots be exempt from having to pee in a cup to get a paycheck?

Whole heartedly agree Subman......Just about everyone employed as to submit to a drug test for the job, and or random tests while employed. If I have to test to keep a job, why don't they have to test to get a freebie. Paid for by you and me

Right, because nobody gives a crap about the Kurds. They're subhuman and deserve genocide. Same goes for people we have intervened on behalf of in Africa. And don't even get me started on Israel, the Jews seem to prone to being victims of ethnic violence, it's a lost cause. It's their own fault, right?

That's not to say that I support U.S. Wars in general. I would have been more than happy to turn a deaf ear to the pleas of the Western allies in ww1 and ww2. I think we actually have a tendency to cause more harm than we prevent in many cases. But I would like to see at least a little appreciation for the sacrifices U.S. soldiers have made around the globe in the name of freedom for others.

That said, GR is right about our welfare system. Even after reform, it sucks. Unlike people oppressed at gunpoint around the world, most of our welfare recipients chose their fate when they made poor choices or wouldn't stoop to earning a low wage and starting at the bottom of the ladder like the rest of us. And it isn't as if there is any shortage of generous private entities willing to help them. Many will provide them with jobs and shelter, and some will even build homes for them, provided they are willing to help themselves.

What it all comes down to is that in this nation, most of our "poor" people are willfully stupid, lazy, and/or selfish. There is absolutely no reason why any moderately able-bodied person cannot work hard and save money and improve their lot in life. It only requires the determination to do it.
Many of them are quite comfortable with resting on other people's laurels and demanding some sort of entitlement for no reason other than the fact that they are human beings. They should be thankful that there are so many people selfless enough to devote their time, money, and effort into helping them, despite their foolishness, before they ask the state to steal from the industrious to support their continued failures.

Just curious: Why are you assuming the person taking the picture is a "Homeless person receiving a government funded meal"?

Is it because the man was black?

It could have been just an ordinary working citizen who choose to take a picture of the First Lady doing a charitable act. It may have been one of the employees of the shelter for all we know.

Just wondering...

yeah... its cause he's black.

moron.

the picture (captions of which i did not author) serves two purposes

1. to inject a bit of humor

2. to point out that YES - the system is abused.

take it or leave it.

No need for personal attacks.

And you didnt really answer the question, unless I missed something; what proof is there that this person wasnt a volunteer?

No Need for personal attacks understood.

but thats the core defense - call the other guy a racist OR resort to the "is it cause he is black?" card.

its ridiculous, before long it will be illegal to be a white guy

According to brief research... The LA Times was first to open up on this "story"... perhaps the LA Times reporter who balked about it would know?

i dont pretend to know anything about this man or his circumstances... but it makes for a great "priceless" ad
