Time for a little general rant (not aimed at a specific game but in general).
I don't know about the rest of you but motion blur effects and other effects in games drive me nuts. I see them as being utterly pointless. For one thing my eyes are perfectly able to blur fast moving things on my monitor naturally. I don't need a game adding to it. Second its usually so seriously over done so that the entire world becomes an unrecognizable mess the moment you turn a corner, or spin the camera around. This brings me to camera motion blur, where the view blurs when you move the camera. Does your vision ever blur when you turn your head? So why on earth are they making cameras blur. And with fast camera motion our eyes will blur the image naturaly. I have to say im getting sick of all these gimick display effects which don't make the game look better or more real, but make it worse and ugly. The realy bad ones even make my eyes hurt or can give me a headache after a while. Worse stilll is those games where you can't even turn them off. On top of it these stupid effects waste computer resources and cost frame rate. I wish devs would stop bothering with this crap which doesnt make the game look better, but worse, and stop adding things that we already do naturaly. Anyhow rant done ![]() |

I think the motion blur looks good in screen shots. (And I think you can turn motion blur off in crysis, dont know about arma.)

Ya it can look good in screen shots by depicting speed, but thats because a screenshot is a still picture.

Wish there was some way to turn it off in Arma 2, and the annoying Bloom effect too. The eyes...OH THE EYES!

Oh, bloom is the most annoying effect. Game developers sometimes think that world looks radioactive.

Some games i cannot even play cause of all the fancy effects as they make me dizzy and nauseated its like having car sickness. If i want to play the game that gives me this problem i have to turn everything off that will display the effects - if the game even has a small burr effect im ready to throwup if i watch the effect for to long. Yet i can sit in front of a television and watch the same effect with no problems.

Hrmm I actually like motion blur. I also like head bob, depth of field, etc. I'll admit though, some games have been 'over-the-top' or even half-assed with these effects
Motion blur is pretty nice when it's subtle. It gives a sense of speed. It's especially nice in racing/driving games. I think as an fps, Left 4 Dead did motion blur very well (I think, I don't really remember). Depth of field effect seems to be very popular nowadays. I like it because it makes the picture look like it has more depth. When you can see to the ends of the earth, it tends to look flat. A good example of this being an improvement (imo) would be the panoramic mod for Stalker. I would much prefer to see more games use this effect 'dynamically' rather than fixed though. Gothic 3 was, sadly, the first game I noticed DoF on. So it was a pretty bad first impression. Done right though (subtle, not too close to player), it is a great effect. I think the only effect I really hate is bloom. Maybe in a subtle way it could be okay, but it's always over the top. When things become an indistinguishable white light, it's too much. Gives me a headache. It's like when I open Google on my 37" lcd without changing the background color. Like somebody opened the ark! Oh and I'd like to talk a bit about SSAO or 'Screen Space Ambient Occlusion'. Okay, so I don't have the best system out there, my 'current' card is an 8800gs, which actually works pretty damn well. When SSAO is enabled, it KILLS performance in any game I've tried it in. And for what? Side by side, yeah I guess I see an improvement in picture, but to me it's too subtle for the performance hit. Perhaps in time it will be the norm, but for now, I think it sucks. I recently played a cheap one-off by Tripwire called 'Killing Floor' and let me tell you, it has the WORST motion blur and bloom I have ever freaking seen. Also, god awful L4D copy and one of the best examples of why achievements/bonuses/whatever don't add to a game, just artificial replay value. As far as I'm concerned, unless you're playing an rpg, 'character progression' and ranks add nothing to the game. That's a different discussion though. ps. It's annoying when the only method of AA is 'deferred shading' but it's not so bad. Sure it blurs the picture, but blurry beats the hell out of jaggy. If anybody has the Stalker games, open the console and type r2_aa on (looks better eh?). |

Motion blur in today's games is just an excuse for not using AA and having choppy frame rates. It has nothing to do with artistic expression.
This is NOT an improvement. Actually I'd prefer that Motion blur were discarded and instead have the software houses concentrate on developing games that support high levels of AA and stable framerates (60 fps) nothing of this 20-30 fps crap that keeps infecting all pc games because of consolitis. ![]() |

While I do like motion blur, I will say that it is pretty f'ed up how many games don't seem to use AA. I've been pestered into trying Bioshock and it doesn't seem to do aa either. AA and AF are the best. It doesn't matter how good a game's graphics are. Without AA and AF, it looks bad, blurry and jaggy. One of the exciting parts about getting a new video card is seeing how much more of aa and af I can apply
![]() I think Oblivion was the first game I played when this became a problem. "what? I can't have AA and HDR at the same time? wtf!" Luckily it was 'fixed' in time. -btw, I chose AA over HDR ![]() |

Check your video card settings!
