U-45's career off to a great start!
Well, I started my second patrol in U-45. My first patrol was rather uneventful since the war hadn't even started. Like my first patrol, I was ordered to patrol BF19. Unlike the first patrol I was not going to risk going through the English Channel. I departed Wilhelmshaven headed to BF19 by going north of the Orkney Islands. My route takes me through grid square AN11. Just as I get to the western edge my lookout spots a warship. Upon further inspection it is a task force! I can hardly believe it! I am in a prime position as they are heading right for me! I was never this lucky with my fleetboat!
![]() I decide to target the Southampton cruiser first. I set my torpedoes for 3m and a four shot salvo spread. Two eels hit home while two miss. ![]() ![]() No matter. I quickly turn around and fire a stern torpedo. ![]() My first confirmed kill of my new career is a Southampton cruiser! ![]() At first I was going to call it a day and continue on my way, but I just couldn't let two more juicy targets sail on unscathed. ![]() I let them get a ways in front of me before I surface. While my men reload torpedoes I am trying to catch them up so I can do an end-around. They are going ENE and I am going E. To my utter amazement these two ships turn SSE! Right towards me! They must have a deathwish. I decide to fire single shots at these auxiliary cruisers instead of a salvo. As the lead AC approaches, I fire two shots. The first shot hits it in the bow and she lights up like the 4th of July! It must have been an ammo bunker. I wasn't expeciting such an easy kill so I didn't get a shot, sadly. I did get a shot of her dead in the water. ![]() As the lead auxiliary cruiser sinks, I quickly fire two shots at the second. ![]() They are enough to finish her off and this grey wolf gets its third kill of the new career! ![]() It is only Sept. 14, 1939, and the Brits are already out three cruisers! ![]() I stopped playing after I reloaded the torpedo tubes and brought the external torpedoes inside. I can hardly wait to see what the rest of the patrol brings! I'm still quite a ways away from BF19. I am currently NW of Ireland. |

That's quite a feat considering they were probably going at 20 knots or faster. Those shots are very challenging. Hang out for Weserabung in April 1940 and you'll have an overdose of warships to shoot at. You'll have all the opportunities the real sub captains had, but your torpedoes are way more reliable.
