The no anti-aliasing is always a PITA isn't it? Hard to make out masts without AA

Using the ATI Catalyst CP:

Anti-Aliasing: 24x Edge Detect. This is a frame rate killer, make sure your PC can handle it. With 8x Box, I get 120fps in port, 300-400fps at sea (including convoys). With 24x Edge Detect, I get 50-60fps in port, 200-300fps at sea (including convoys). As you can see, it only really matters in a port with lots of buildings, aircraft, and ships around.

Adaptive Anti-Aliasing: For transparent textures. I don't notice much of any difference between performance and quality in SH3 for this setting, then again, is there anything transparent in SH3?

Anisotropic Filtering: 16x

Catalyst A.I.: Advanced

Mipmap Detail Level: High Quality

As stated above, the only major framerate difference I saw was when changing the anti-aliasing settings. Everything looks significantly better with the 24x Edge Detect filter than with the 8x Box filter, and my PC could handle it even in port so I went with it.

PC Specs:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition (3.2GHz) Socket AM3
MoBo: ASUS M4A79T Deluxe AMD 790FX chipset
RAM: OCZ SpecOps 4GB DDR3 1600MHz
GPU: XFX ATI Radeon HD 4890 Xtreme, 1GB 256-bit PCI-E 2.0 DirectX 10.1, DDR5 Core Clock: 875MHz, Memory Clock: 3.9GHz

The Catalyst AI Setting controls the algorithm used to optimize graphics performance. In most cases, Standard is good enough. I cant see a reason for wanting to disable it, you'll just get slower performance. You can think of it as a framerate booster. That's a really basic way of putting it without getting into the nitty gritty. In games where textures are loaded frequently, or on a slow machine, then Standard will work better than Advanced. I use Advanced for SH3 since there really isn't textures being loaded frequently (as compared to say a first-person shooter or an air combat game, all that ground detail for example, or debris falling off of damaged planes, bullets, flak, etc.). My framerate with Cat AI set to standard in SH3 is slightly (but barely) lower than with advanced. Cat AI can also, in some occasions, increase image quality.

Thanks for the info Kptlt. Siegmann,I don't suppose you have any sites to recommend about settings for GFX cards,I used to have one that explained everything but its been lost since a rebuild
