I have not messed with the multiplayer side of SH4, Wicked... is that the main benefit of Steam? And didn't I also see something about a difference in the Steam SH4 and the regular CD version of SH4? Just curious... never used Steam before.

The main difference is the copy protection scheme. Wether or not the two versions are sympatico for online play I dont know.

I do know online play is a bit crippled in that the two players must have the exact same package (mods, and version) to connect. Even when you do connect its not all that compelling (no time compression, etc.).

Got nothing against online play but Ill defer to those that actually do it for now.

Thanks SW... that makes sense.

No time compression in multiplayer? Holy cow, that would make for some long games! Yikes... or do all the players just spawn already in range of each other?

That's all determined by the mission they use. A good mission is the only way to make multiplayer worthwhile without the time compression feature. With a good mission I can't see any reason multiplay couldn't be fun.

Understood RR - I was thinking of an "open world" format as opposed to a defined mission. Makes perfect sense to me now. Duh.

I may have to try multiplayer sometime... course I will have to punch a few holes in the firewall to do it.

One last question: can players connect directly or is there a cost for the service to connect (like Steam)? Thanks all.
