Default My type II Hydrophone gives updates while surfaced. Is this a bug?

My type II Hydrophone gives updates while surfaced. Is this a bug? I just started a new campaign with a type II. The only thing I used previously was a type VIIB.

I thought it was odd when I asked the hydrophone PO to track a merchant and after I surfaced he was still giving me updates. I kept going until gradually his updates whet from bearing 268, 254 etc until he reached 178 then I knew the ship was behind me.

This is in the stock game by the way. Also when I am surfaced and manually scan the hydrophone, there is no signal, which is correct and yet If I asked for updates when submerged and then surface I get continual updates. This is annoying because I don't want to cheat and I also want to play the Type II but not if the AI is going to give me a crutch like this. Is there anyway to fix this so I don't get updates while surfaced. I am playing with 100 realism.

How's the weather? If your boat is dipping beneath the waves regularly you should get hydrophone updates then. The main hydrophone array is built into the sides of the boat near the bow. It is possible to have the improved KDH sensor, but that is actually mounted on the deck, so it would definitely only work while submerged.

I've never experienced that particular problem, but it sounds like the 'silent running' bug: if you surface while Silent Running is set, your crew will still not do anything until you secure from it. Likewise you cannot open torpedo doors below 25 meters depth, which is okay, but if you go that deep with them open you then can't close them either!

its a bug.

i noticed it the other day when i gave the order to the sonar man to track a warship.

after i surfaced he continued to track the ship providing accurate data with relation to bearing and speed etc.

the weather for me was perfect calm.

it was not an issue of dipping below the water line with the receiver

test this out someone.

order the hydrophone operator to track a merchant or warship and then surface... he will keep tracking it

Well then we need to tell him to stop doing that - it's bad for the morale of the player.

Actually I think there are two different phenomena being described ITT.

The ongoing tracking once surfaced seems to go on indefinitely no matter the weather, and is a bug.

The reporting of new contacts once surfaced only occurs when the boat dips beneath the surface in high seas. This may or may not be a bug.

two separate issues being discussed here, the latter of which is not a bug.

to stop the tracking just tell the hydrophone operator to go to "normal sweep"

Well I'm not in silent running. There are some waves but not rough by any means. I am not sure how to shut him up{ the hydrophone PO that is}. Since its a merchant he's tracking I suppose if I ask him to track a warship then he will stop.

It turns out its only a French trawl and since I only have 5 torps not wasting one on him. Maybe I can drop off my Hydrophone guy off on the trawl, I think it might help the German war effort
