From what I understand, it was customary to make a poem in the ships log for the new year. The following is from the USS Torsk 1954.
1 January 1954 0000 - 0400 Drydocked in DD#1, Portsmouth NSY 0000 - This brave fighter's name is TORSK from under the blue sea Manned by fine men of whom she is proud, as they are of she. Today for her we dream, and toil producing sweat So that tomorrow, her equal will not be met. We are submariners, our efforts will ne'r cease And this night, we wish the world a lasting peace. Topside the Winter winds are cold and frisky, While we have next year to celebrate with Whisky So enter 1954, and spread good cheer, And to all hands, A Happy New Year! Signed - M. L. Schenker, LTJG USN

It still is customary for the mid-watch to use their creative skills for the first entry of the year.
