Default Tell me why oh why...

Tonight Im cruising to my assigned patrol area in Formosa Straights in mid 1944.

We get spotted by a patrol aircraft and crash dive. During the descent we pick up a DD.

Alter the course to intercept and wholy moly its half the Jap fleet out there, complete with air cover. A dozen ships including some flat tops. Quite a sight.

To make a long story short there is no way were going to get into position submerged for even a long shot on the convoy, we made a dash at flank but the DD's know were there and steamed straight for us, guess the spot plane tipped em off. Better go deep. I even watched one time with external cam the plane make a strafing run on our position while we were at close to 200 feet deep ... whatever. There was no way to execute an attack and not get torn to little pieces by the 3... yes 3 destroyers out pinging away.

We got the hell out of there without a scratch and surfaced some distance away. Got to phone this one in ! ... Wait a minute... we cant?! Uhhh I know how many ships, I know their course and speed, this is important ! "Says here you cant report a convoy unless there in sight" an ensign tells me.

So not only did they get away we dident even get to report them Note to self... make report then dive.

ps; Was "passing thermal layer" taken out in RFB ?

Because Ubi are stupid and forgot to leave that functionality in there! Shame that task force would have been a good one to get in amongst and let loose with all the tubes then run like stink to get away from the DDs.

Just like in real life, the thermal layer is not always there. It's only there when you don't need it.:rotfl:

Yes true !! it depends of the salt in the water, temperature and other factors, so one time could be at 100 meters and others at 250

Yea... too bad that plane spotted me

Its a sickining feeling when 3 DD's set course straight at you doing some 20 Knots.

Maybe not that bad! At "fast" speeds they're somewhat or toatally deaf sonarwise. You can still go flank and manouver. You can even cosider dashing towards the DDs. "Listen" to their screws or have your sonarman report contact speed. As long as RPMs ar high or the sonarman reports a "fast" contact continue on flank. If the DD hits the breaks wich means he's putting his "stethoscope" on, stop caughing, goto low speed, silent running dive and jive (you know what to do ). There is a possibility they'll "overshoot" your actual position, speeding to the location you were last reported.
This "maneuver" is doable in stock 1.4. More aggressive mods? I don't know. I hear that with certain mods, DDs can "listen" to a squid farting at 100m depth! But can they do it moving at 20+ kts?

Oh trust me we scratched for the bottom in crash dive made a turn all at flank, once the DD's arrived on the scene they went into the tag team mode. One drifts and listens while the other stomps about dropping cans.

By this time we were at 210 feet running silent. I never heard the passing thermal announcement... regardless we got away. Fortunatly we had enough manuver room before they arrived and they never got a fix on us again.

Good thing too.. funny how its re-assuring to hear the distant booms of DC's being dropped on the wrong spot. and drop alot of them they did, sounded like a thunderstorm.
