Default Manual Targeting gods, please help me

alright, so i figured out my torpedo malfunctions *tactical forehead slap* i was on manual targeting. and i didnt realise it...
but now that i have it i cant stop using it...i only have one problem...
when i am stalking a merchant, how do i get speed?
i usually guess, by looking at bow wake and how fast its moving across my bows...or stern. and so far its been reasonably accurate
but i know that there is probably a better way to do it but i lost it...

i am running
RFB1.5
and RSRDC for RFB 1.5 and patch 4

any advice? something i am missing?
thanks for the help

Time target for 3 minutes, measure the distane covered, divide by 1000, and you have a speed in knots.

There are better ways, but I'll let someone else explain that.
