After a I complete a patrol, I usually put any renown collected back into the boat as either crew, or equip. I got the impression, after passing through the forums, that to further your skippers career, he should maintain a high renown value. Is that the case?

Nope, it's cumulated renown that advances your career. You can spend all your renown if you're not saving it for some other purpose(like future radar upgrades or torpedoes).
