I was reading an article this morning on news.com.au involving many economists who say that petrol is being kept at artificial highs, there are millions and millions of barrles of oil just sitting on ships in the gulf, and that the price could drop as low as US$100 by december.

i'll try linky it up

my stepdad worked on tankers, to create a demand they used to have them sit up even in mid ocean to get more money so yeah that is believeable.

How will cutting fuel duty help them get to work?
They might only pay...say...£40 to fill the tank, but the £17 they save will have to
be accounted for else where. Either by taxing something else, which means you have
not gained anything, or by cutting spending; something which all ways effects the poor
more than other sections of society.

I live miles from anywhere in the middle of the country and I commute 30 miles to work.
Fuel is an issue for me too, but I would rather fuel tax stay where it is than a reduction
in fuel balanced by, say a increase in income tax.
At least with fuel tax I have some, limited choice in how I contribute to the treasury.

True but the more you put fuel prices up the more the bus company put thier prices up (i work for them atm) they are not cheap tickets because the company wont run a route that wont pay the biggest expenditure is diesel since last september the ticket prices increased by between 95% and 115% just to cover the cost.

Now if that doesnt affect the poor people who cant afford a car then i dont know what does.

Yes, until a few months ago I was on the buses.

£12.05 return for a total round trip of ~50 - 70 miles.

That wasn't cheep and it was voluntarily work. Often I was the only person on the bus.

Don't the buses get a lot of subsidies? They are under a PSA right?
It seams like 75% of people who use them get a free pass. Myself included now. I suspect
the free passes push up prices as well.
