Nope, not the first. I had one in mid '43 while infiltrating the anchorage at Truk. Just about every DD in the harbor started racing toward me as soon as I hit "All Back Emergency." Boy am I glad I manually check the torpedos on sonar that they are indeed running hot straight and normal. That shot would have probably finished off the Fuso I was attacking. :p

p.s., I died anyways. (5 DD's + 65 ft water + 1 Sub = Death)

Default circle runners

Had one from a stern tube that was meant to head to port (where the target was) but turned to starboard (where I was in the way). In the same sub, following patrol attacked a merchant with all 4 forward tubes and both stern tubes and a follow up from the front with 4 deep runners (set at depths between 8ft and 4ft and all went underneath), one miss, one hit (dud) and one hit (boom). That sole hit was on magnetic fusing (the only fish that was) so no hole, but it did spring some plates and start a fire. It was armed (that 3 inch turret on the back) so wasn't game to do much shooting (I did a bit, but had to keep diving whenever it turned to present the sting in the tail). It took over 3 hours for the sucker to die. This job will get so much easier when the torpedoes work...

I had three in a row

while doing research with WernerSobe's Natural Sinking Mechanics Test Mission for the Dick O'Kane targeting technique. I was doing perverted things with the American TDC to try to bend it to my will when a torpedo left the tube, turned right and did a lap around the boat. I must have done something wrong.

So I tried a different setup and got another circle runner. This can't be a coincidence! Maybe there is something to always having to enter range with bearing. I cleared out all TDC settings and tried again. The attack screen showed the torpedo track going out on bearing zero.

I got a third circle runner, which sank me that time. While reloading the mission, I tried to figure out what I had done to cause three torpedoes to go so wrong.

Then suddenly they began to go where I sent them. I haven't had a circle runner now in two months.

oh--you don't find them, they find you!

Had in game. Unfortunately was unable to avoid.
It's funny how well the contact and magnetic exploders work so well when the torpedoes run circular.

Resectfully Submitted;

Default Got One Last Night -- Lucky To Write About Today

Had a medium split in very calm seas, mid-day, good weather, had a nice set up for stern shot at ~900 yards with zero gyro and sub all all-stop. Playing v1.5 with TMO and RSRD installed, 75% realism (auto targeting), August 1942.

Fired 2 torpedoes, first hit and started the target slowig and listing, waited for the second but no report. Hmmm, figured it maybe ran deep (after all, who could miss with a set-up like this?) and then I saw in my periscope what looked like a torpedo wake as I was setting up for a kill shot. Went to external camera to see it was a circle runner. Aaack! Bad feeling in a virtual world, I'm sure in RL it would make your blood run cold. Apparently because of the run out the circles were just behind my sub, so I just sat there until it ran out. By that time the target was DIW and listing heavily so I elected to finish her with deck gun. Glad I wasn't backing up when I shot that.

As an aside, might be a nice mod to add a report of "Torpedoes running straight and true" to confirm a normal launch and initial run; I know they made such a report in RL (I'd need to confirm verbage)--or maybe a report if you had a circle runner? Rare, but if truly happens tough to avoid even if you catch it right away...

Yep. Had one that kept going over top of me thank god it didnt explode. Had a mishap in SH3 where it came back and hit me. I must have fired of my homeing torpedo accidently.

The first one was reported about a week after the game was released, well over a year ago.

as with duds the random wild torpedo will go the wrong way or circle or even just go straight line from bow or stern. you will see them often but if your lucky its not too often.

Actually Gimpy, you don't have to find circle runners. Most of the time they find you!

Nice photos there Doolittle81.

I have yet to fall victim to a circle runner, but there is always a first time (if not a last time!)
