Hi
Working on the two sets of awards for the WWI SHIII version I am working on for prussia,, would this sequence be corrct Pour le merit Order of the black eagle order of the red eagle Order of the crown, Iron cross 1st Iron cross 2nd mentioned in dispatches U-boat war badge Or Austria Order of Maria Theresa Order of Hungary star order of the iron crown gold star order of Franz Joseph silver Star Order of the iron crown Commander Medal for military merit cross mentioned in dspatches Uboat war pin. Please, if this is not correct fror WWI, let me know as I am far from an expert in this area. I think some of these may not be military awrads but more a royal family award, just not sure. Any advice is welcomed thanks in advance Last edited by USS Sea Tiger; 03-18-08 at 04:27 AM. Reason: spelling |

There was a Pour le Mérite with oakleaves, but apparently not even Baron von Richthofen qualified for this award, and only generals and such appeared to be eligible. There was also a Grand Cross of the Iron Cross, but it was also reserved for the most senior generals: only 5 were awarded during World War I, to the Kaiser, Hindenberg, Ludendorff, Mackensen, and Prince Leopold of Bavaria. Maybe this order, with more detailed information on different grades of these medals at these links: Order of the Red Eagle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Red_EagleThat's all I can think of for now. There was no decoration for being mentioned in dispatches. However, it was considered a special honour to receive an autographed photo of the Kaiser or a handwritten letter of commendation. As Pablo already said, the order of the black eagle (which takes precedence even over the pour le merite) was rarely awarded to non-royalty. You have also missed the House Order of Hohenzollern, which was given out below the crown order but above the iron cross 1st class. So the correct order should be: Order of the black eagle (if you want to include it) Pour le mérite Order of the red eagle Handwritten letter of commendation by the Kaiser Order of the crown House order of Hohenzollern Autographed photograph of the Kaiser Iron cross 1st class Iron cross 2nd class Letter of commendation from Tirpitz/Scheer or any other admiral uboot-war badge I am going to end this post here as I am writing from a wireless connection. More on Prussia later. Last edited by Paul.Saenger; 03-19-08 at 12:44 PM. |

Okay, continued.
First of all, there were different classes of the orders. Most of the prussian order had six classes. Order of the red eagle:
Furthermore, in wartime awards, swords could be added for further distinction. Order of the crown
Within the House order of Hohenzollern, there were two distinctions. First, there was the princely and the royal branch . I would suggest not focusing on the princely branch, since it was given out mostly to soldiers, not members of the navy. Within the royal branch, there were three different classes available for officers:

Okay, this will be the semi-final post about orders and decorations of the Kingdom of Prussia.
Here is what I think you should do: - do not focus on the different classes of the orders, since that would clutter the board too much. Instead sacrifice historical accuracy for the sake of gameplay and just tell them apart from the distinctions. Here's Is a very simplified order of precedende, from the lowest to the highest order. uboot-war badge Iron cross 2nd class Iron cross 1st class Autographed photograph of the Kaiser Knights cross of the House of Hohenzollern Knights cross of the House of Hohenzollern with swords Komtur's cross of the House of Hohenzollern Komtur's cross of the House of Hohenzollern with swords Großkomtur's cross of the House of Hoenzollern Großkomtur's cross of the House of Hoenzollern with swords Order of the crown Order of the crown with swords Order of the crown with swords and oak leaves Order of the crown with star Order of the crown with star and swords Order of the crown with star, swords and oak leaves Grand Cross of the Order of the crown with star Grand Cross of the Order of the crown with star and swords Grand Cross of the Order of the crown with star, swords and oak leaves handwritten letter of commendation of the Kaiser Order of the red eagle Order of the red eagle with swords Order of the red eagle with breast star Order of the red eagle with breast star and swords Grand cross of the order of the red eagle with brest star Grand cross of the order of the red eagle with brest star and swords Pour le mérite Pour le mérite with oak leaves Order of the black eagle (badge/cross with breast star) Now, this might be a bit too much to script and to draw. Furthermore, many people may get confused with this, since there is a bewildering amount of variations. So, this is a simplified version of the simplified version, with only the most common /highest medals present: uboot-war badge Iron cross 2nd class Iron cross 1st class Autographed photograph of the Kaiser Knights cross of the House of Hohenzollern Knights cross of the House of Hohenzollern with swords Order of the crown Order of the crown with swords Order of the crown with swords and oak leaves Order of the crown with star, swords and oak leaves Grand Cross of the Order of the crown with star, swords and oak leaves handwritten letter of commendation of the Kaiser Order of the red eagle Order of the red eagle with swords Order of the red eagle with breast star Order of the red eagle with breast star and swords Grand cross of the order of the red eagle with brest star Grand cross of the order of the red eagle with brest star and swords Pour le mérite Pour le mérite with oak leaves Order of the black eagle (badge/cross with breast star) And finally, the most simplified version of them all: uboot-war badge Iron cross 2nd class Iron cross 1st class Autographed photograph of the Kaiser Knights cross of the House of Hohenzollern with swords Order of the crown with swords Order of the crown with star and swords Order of the crown with star, swords and oak leaves handwritten letter of commendation of the Kaiser Order of the red eagle Order of the red eagle with swords Order of the red eagle with breast star Order of the red eagle with breast star and swords Pour le mérite Pour le mérite with oak leaves Order of the black eagle (badge/cross with breast star) If you disregard the various orders of chivalry and purely rely on military decorations, you could just use: uboot-war badge Iron cross 2nd class Iron cross 1st class Autographed photograph of the Kaiser Knights cross of the House of Hohenzollern with swords handwritten letter of commendation of the Kaiser Pour le mérite Pour le mérite with oak leaves Still, if you have the time and want to go for historical accuracy, I would definitely use this: uboot-war badge Iron cross 2nd class Iron cross 1st class Autographed photograph of the Kaiser Knights cross of the House of Hohenzollern Knights cross of the House of Hohenzollern with swords Komtur's cross of the House of Hohenzollern Komtur's cross of the House of Hohenzollern with swords Großkomtur's cross of the House of Hoenzollern Großkomtur's cross of the House of Hoenzollern with swords Order of the crown Order of the crown with swords Order of the crown with swords and oak leaves Order of the crown with star Order of the crown with star and swords Order of the crown with star, swords and oak leaves Grand Cross of the Order of the crown with star Grand Cross of the Order of the crown with star and swords Grand Cross of the Order of the crown with star, swords and oak leaves handwritten letter of commendation of the Kaiser Order of the red eagle Order of the red eagle with swords Order of the red eagle with breast star Order of the red eagle with breast star and swords Grand cross of the order of the red eagle with brest star Grand cross of the order of the red eagle with brest star and swords Pour le mérite Pour le mérite with oak leaves Order of the black eagle (badge/cross with breast star) |

Further german orders were also awarded to naval personal.
IMO it would be a mistake to only focus on the prussian orders, since germany had a lot of semi-sovereign states and cities who gave out awards to german soldiers. The Hanseatic cities of Bremen, Lübeck and Hamburg awarded a so called Hanseatic cross, similar to the iron cross, but it being a special distinction for german naval personal. House and Merit Order of Duke Peter Frederick Louis of Oldenbourg: Of these, the Commander, officer and Knights classes were awarded to officers below the rank of general. The Commander was a neck badge, the Officer's and knights crosses a breast badge. I would suggest focusing on the Knight's cross, however we should disregard it since it was not one of the important ones. Military Merit Cross of Mecklenburg Schwerin, similar to the Iron cross, had two classes. I think we can disregard this one. Bavarian Military Merit Order (Militär-Verdienstorden), awarded to the following:
Military Order of Max Joseph of Bavaria: One of the highes orders of Germany, with the priviledge of being ennobled. Three classes, Grand Cross (Großkreuz), Commander's Cross (Kommandeurkreuz) and Knight's Cross (Ritterkreuz). Only the Ritterkreuz must concern us. Military Merit Order (Militärverdienstorden) of Württemberg. Awarded to Otto Weddigen. Came in three classes, Grand Cross (Großkreuz), Commander's Cross (Kommandeurkreuz) and Knight's Cross (Ritterkreuz). Only the Ritterkreuz must concern us. Military Order of St. Henry of Saxony. Four classes, Grand Cross (Großkreuz), Commander's Cross 1st Class (Kommandeurkreuz I. Klasse), Commander's Cross 2nd Class (Kommandeurkreuz II. Klasse), Knight's Cross (Ritterkreuz). Only the Ritterkreuz must concern us, but we can disregard this one as well, since mostly people from saxony received those. So, giving the order of precedence of those: Hanseatic cross Bavarian Military Merit Order Bavarian Military Merit Order with swords Bavarian Military Merit Order with crown and swords Ritterkreuz of the Military Merit order of Württemberg Ritterkreuz of the Military Order of Max Joseph Attaching them with the order of precedende (additions shown in italic): uboot-war badge Iron cross 2nd class Iron cross 1st class Hanseatic cross Autographed photograph of the Kaiser Knights cross of the House of Hohenzollern = Bavarian Military Merit Order Knights cross of the House of Hohenzollern with swords = Bavarian Military Merit Order with swords Bavarian Military Merit Order with crown and swords Ritterkreuz of the Military Merit order of Württemberg Komtur's cross of the House of Hohenzollern Komtur's cross of the House of Hohenzollern with swords Großkomtur's cross of the House of Hoenzollern Großkomtur's cross of the House of Hoenzollern with swords Order of the crown Order of the crown with swords Order of the crown with swords and oak leaves Order of the crown with star Order of the crown with star and swords Order of the crown with star, swords and oak leaves Grand Cross of the Order of the crown with star Grand Cross of the Order of the crown with star and swords Grand Cross of the Order of the crown with star, swords and oak leaves Ritterkreuz of the Military Order of Max Joseph handwritten letter of commendation of the Kaiser Order of the red eagle Order of the red eagle with swords Order of the red eagle with breast star Order of the red eagle with breast star and swords Grand cross of the order of the red eagle with brest star Grand cross of the order of the red eagle with brest star and swords Pour le mérite Pour le mérite with oak leaves Order of the black eagle (badge/cross with breast star) |

IC2 - Iron cross 2nd class IC1 - Iron cross 1st class U-Boot war badge - WWI Uboot war badge U-boot front clasp - Hanseatic cross, since it most closely relates to naval victories and sea action German Cross - Knights cross of the House of Hohenzollern with swords Knight's Cross - Pour le mérite Knight's Cross with oak leaves - handwritten letter of commendation of the Kaiser Knights cross with oak leaves and swords - Military merit order of Bavaria, 4th Class with Crown and Swords (although a Bavarian decoration, it was also awarded to naval personnal of non-bavarian origins.) Knights cross with swords, oak leaves and diamonds: Order of the crown with swords and star Knights cross with golden oak leaves, swords and diamonds: Because you have to be a monumental warrior for it, I would suggest the following - Knights cross of the Order of the red eagle with swords and crown - because richthofen got one for his 70th victory - should also confer a patent of nobility, and only two people not having the rank of colonel received it. I have written all with swords, since they were usually added in wartime. |

And here is how the award sequence would look like:

Probably a revised version of the WWII award would do the trick, though Hanseatic cross: ![]() ![]() I used the one from Bremen, since IMO it looks the best of those.
