Default Phillipine Sea Quick Mission

Have done prettly well on most quick missions, and have made 6 patrols, but cannot complete the Phillipine Sea Quick Mission. I like patrols, but sometimes I don't have the time to realy get into a patrol or I just want to try out a different boat and different tatics. This is the mission where you are suppose to sink the Yamamoto and a capital ship. The Ya-mama is located really far to the south headed ESE but to the NW are several escorts and if you so much as fart they'll be on you like white on rice.

Ive tried sneaking down, running silent below the thermocline, but they are so far away they usually get away before getting within range.

Ive tried diving for the thermocline and running at standard hoping the fact that my wake toward the escorts combined w the thermocline would help me. But even then I was so far away that I could just barely reach her. Before getting clobbered by the escorts. I did manage to get 4 hits with MK14s but didn't have time to reload to finish her off before having to dive to the depths.

One of the problems is the loadout. You have 4 MK14s and two Mk18 in the bow and 4 MK14s in the stern tubes. Its 1944 so the MK14s have most of the bugs worked out, so for once the realiability isn't an issue. Ive got close enough to get 4 hits with the bow mk14s, but I was too far away for the mk18s to effective. So I started her smoking but not enough to sink her. Know it isn't a realistic expectation to be able to sink the Ya-mama and a capitol ship, but I've got my fangs into this QM and just have to complete it.

Any ideas?

Running stock SH4 at 83% difficulty. Only thing turned off is manual targeting, and auto update on tact map.

I haven't played this one myself, but it sounds like you need to make those four foward 14s count by at least slowing or stopping it so you can effectively use the other torps. Got to hit a vital spot with all four 14s set to keel hits. I would go for the stern and try to kill the propulsion and/or steering. It's sister flattop was killed with an engine room hit at the water line in the real war.
